I also keep an Autobahn marauder at our home in Germany, but Florida only issues one rear license plate, so I get stopped regularly, not to mention all the friendly citizens who always want to warn me. When the police see the rear Florida plate they just wave at me. Do you keep your car in Switzerland year-round or ship it back to California?

How long can you keep American license plates in Europe before car needs to be locally registered? Did you need to get some papers for Germany to drive around?

Technically you have to take it out of the EU for 6 months (BTW Switzerland is not in the EU). You must maintain "Visitor Insurance" which is available from any ADAC (German Automobile Club) office for about 125 Euros/month for however long the car will be in Germany or any EU country for up to 6 months. To keep a valid Florida license plate I also must keep U.S. insurance in place, however my U.S. underwriter offers storage insurance so it's only about $175/year. The German visitor insurance is only for property damage and liability, so if you crunch it, you pay for it. The best way to ship your car to Europe is through an experienced freight forwarder. There can be no lien on the vehicle title for U.S. Customs to permit the car to leave the U.S..
