Kill stories @ Laguna Seca trackday
Alright guys I saw someone was saying that "kill stories" have gone down recently. Well I was at the track the other day with my w211 so I figured I could at least share a few of mine.
(Now mind you I am in an E320, so you guys could have been faster, I just dont think those non-AMG guys really ever do this kind of stuff.)
July 9th Speed Ventures Trackday @ Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway:
transponder timed: 2:01:944 @ 66.100 mph - best lap
5 runs of 20 minutes each group, point-by passing only - Its registered on fastestlaps.com
Anway I totally pulled on a 350z, which is supposed to have 300hp vs my measly 221. I caught up to him (staggered start) passed and totally left behind. His car was a little faster but I was WAY quicker in corners. The E320 could brake much later and faster, also I could take way more speed into the turns and would accelerate sooner after exiting turns. Since Laguna Seca only really has 3 straights (and one us up a hill) the higher top speed of the 350z really didn't do much.
I over took a few other notables; a miata or two (slow as hell up the hill) and an RX-7, as well as a Corvette and a Porsche Cayman whom were obviously driven by beginners. Overall I was slow compared to others as this car isn't really suited for the track, but it did hold up really well and its helping me decide what features I want in my next car.
Also I think my wheel and tire package really killed the 350z w/ 10-inch 285 series tires on the rear wheels. Considering the speeds and conditions I would squeel tires much less, and the front wheels I felt cooled the brakes. I think I read an article where a 350z was being compairison tested and it went into a wall (with a professional driver) when the brakes didn't do well on race condions. Although after runs my brake calipers were so hot, you could lite a cigarette on them!!

2004 S55 (SOLD, miss it every day), 2009 GL550
edit: it was a Nismo 370Z, and it was insufficient pads, not the whole brake setup, and the upgraded pads are an option, not a standard piece of the package.

link to follow-up testing of pad upgrade
