What do you guys think is the best exhaust?

Hi from the UK!

Just want opinions please on what you guys think is the best way of getting some more ''sound'' from my E55k. It's a little too quiet for me. I thought of removing some of the boxes from my standard system, but the problem with that is that I have a warranty and don't want any excuses for not paying up.

So really I see it one of two ways:

1. Buy another prob 2nd hand standard system and play around with it.

2. Buy an after market item. Quite happy for this to be 2nd hand too.

This would allow me to change back to the original when the car goes in for a service or needs warranty work.

What do we think please.

My Kleemann Headers did the trick for me

Form and function, they sound great and put down the power.

save the money and get some headers and replace the stock cats with racing cats.

Have the headers made a big difference in sound then? Perhaps this is stupid question if that is what you are telling me to do.

Although the prob with doing the headers is my warranty situation. At least with an exhaust I can swap it as much as I like without problems.

Keep the ideas coming though guys......thanks.

for example you install a set of headers and down the road your crank positon sensor goes out, it is highly unlikely that they will blame the failure of the sensor due to aftermarket headers. now on the other hand if the 02 sensors go bad then yes they will not cover it under warranty and blame the failure due to headers.
it is a decision you have to make.
aftermarket mufflers dont add any significant HP to the car.

Complying with my warranty is my number one concern when modding. Sounds like you worry about this, too.

With that in mind, I removed the secondary cats and resonator and put an x-pipe in place of the resonator.

Its easy on the wallet, you get a noticeable sound increase and don't have to worry too much about warranty issues.

Where did you get your x-pipe?

I am telling you right now, if you face MAJOR issues with your car, they will try to blame mods. Don't let anyone tell you different. Benz has special regional guys that they send around to sniff out stuff like this when there is a catastophic problem like engine failure.

Otherwise it totally depends on your dealer what your will face when going in for warranty service with mods.

I have 2 completely different dealers in my city. One will actually install the headers for you. The other says straight up, they will "Section x" (forgot the term) you instantly....on the spot...if they spot aftermarket.

All that being said, if you want that mean sound...it's headers all the way. Not sure if shorties would help the sound but they can be popped off in a weekend if you blow something major.

Sticky situation...no way around it. Good luck with your choice.

Wonder what a stock car sounds like with resonators removed? Might give you some growl.

meisterschaft or eisenmann race exhausts will do okay lol. For the money I would do long tube headers though.

Yes! Messing up the warranty is something that worries me a lot. We know that if these machines go wrong it's ''big bucks''. I don't like big bills! I wan't someone else to take the pain, hence the reason for buying the warranty in the first place. lol.

I would like to know more about the whole x pipe thing. Did this involve changing/cutting anything? Or does it simply replace a section? Perhaps some pics of how it's done? This is why I was after a 2nd hand exhaust, I thought if I could get one I could have it chopped about but keep my original one for ''service days''. Or perhaps I may be lucky enough to find someone who wants to sell an aftermarket one because it is too loud for their taste (this seems to happen quite alot over on the M5 board. My brother has an E60 M5).

Thanks for your help so far guys. Keep em comin.

Eisenman Race all the way. I love the sound from mine and never had warranty issues. No increase or loss in power so it was all about the sound.

Just spoken to the warranty company and I am not allowed any mods or it will invalidate the policy. Just had a look at the eisenmann system and you have to cut the original exhaust to fit it on. So looks like I will be looking for a 2nd system after all!

I agree that taking the conservative approach with mods when under warranty is the right course of action. If your warranty company specifically said they will void your warranty if you do exhaust mods, then its a no brainer. Your only choice is to get a bolt on system (which requires absolutely no cutting/welding). I'm not sure if anyone makes one, but if they do, I expect it would be so expensive that it wouldn't be worth it, IMO.

Gluck.

I think Supersprint could be the answer!

Europe (Italian site) http://www.supersprint.com/USP000mer2117.asp

USA site http://www.supersprintna.com/categor...arch_model/221

Looks like they might fit to the OEM cats without cutting?!

Thoughts please.

honestly, if you just want sound, replace the rear mufflers and call it a day. no warranty company would get away with denying a claim for that.

if you use the search button for "Headers, Long tubes ...." you will find a lot of detailed pics and comparison between stock manifold and SSheaders and you will find out that it absolutely does not look like that you can avoid a cutting and welding job.

you're probably right as i don't deal with warranty companies in england. however, my previous statement is still correct. bolting up mufflers and then swapping them for the stock ones when you go in for service will be the cheapest and easiest option to get you what you're looking for.
