Cross country driving...

Anyone ever take their E55's on long road trips? I'll be doing about a 1700 mile trip probably this weekend and hope all goes well. Any "special" things anyone recommend i bring for the car?

I've done multiple trips from Northern California to Vancouver BC, roughly 900 miles per way... The 55 drives like a dream with more muscle than you'll ever need... I always take an extra quart of oil with me for emergency purposes, but thankfully I've never needed to use it...

Just travel within a 100 mile radius from a Mercedes dealership and you'll be fine.

j/k. These cars are made for cruising. Bring along a radar detector....

Have a good trip.

I have my 9500ix and have been busted twice so I am selling it now. It has saved me probably twice in six months, but also failed me twice, so speeding I will not do anymore.

Plus, where I live the cops will lie and say they caught you speeding with radar even though you know for certain they could have not of trapped you because your radar says there were not signals.

1700 mi no problem, check your tires (& spare) belts, hoses and coolant.

/\ Thanks for all the responses! Of course, i will be bringing my good ol' V1. I figured the car would be fine, since i have done it in other type of "cheaper" cars with no problems whatsoever. I just wanted to make sure and get some other opinions on others who have done it.

As someone mentioned, check the tires but especially the inside tread. I've seen them wear unevenly on several E's. If you're using the MB navigation and plan to take scenic routes or detours, get an updated DVD. This made a huge difference for me when I went from an '06 to '09 DVD.

How old is your car? check/replace CPS, tires (the inside), and radar detector. These cars are design to cruise.

My first experience with my E55 was driving it 1200+ miles back from Miami. It did just fine.

Within the first year of ownership took the 55 on a 1700 mile round trip and it performed flawlessly. Amazing cruising machine.

So does anyone else second to change out the crank position sensors now? Is there a way to test them? The car is going into the dealer today for a full inspection, if people agree on changing them, maybe i can have them change it out while it's there or i can just buy one and take it with me?

If your car has over 60K miles on it, definitely get the CPS replaced now as preventative maintenance. I just had my replaced last week after suffering through a scary no-start situtation that almost left me stranded in a really bad location. It's not an expensive part and doesn't require much labor to replace.
Just do it, and it's one less worry on a long road trip.

Might be a good idea to have AAA just in case...

I recommend to at least bring the sensor with you. It is a $40 part. Easy 30 min to replace it. Remember to remove the airbox and that will create some more room. I was stranded during rush hour in the middle of turn lane. Good Luck!

I will buy one anyways, and carry it with me just in case. I was quoted $118 for the sensor and that's with about a $15 "discount". The price of the sensor doesn't bother me, the $5XX to install it kinda irritated me considering it's not that difficult to do.

$500 to install a CPS? No way. Dealer charged me $130 after tax. 1 hour labor.

I'd like to go to your dealer then cause i was quoted pretty close to the same price from two different Mercedes dealers in two totally different areas. Oh well.

They must have wanted to take the intake manifold off to get to the part. I had an indy shop quote me $5** and some dollars to do it and that's what they wanted to do.
