I believe that it's both, I've only hit the rev limiter once or twice in my E63. I try not to hit the rev limiter, when ever possible. On my 2010 C63 the display turns red about 200-300 rpms before hit the limiter. I really can't tell you about the E55, as I have both 63s. But I would definitely say both, cuts spark and shuts of fuel injectors.
