LED's for Licence PLate - WTF - Pics?

Ok, so I ordered these "plug and play" replacements for the licence plate lights. I have previously bought some LED globes however one of them was damaged in transit so I thought I would get these instead. Thing is, I cant for the life of me figure out how to install them. I emailed the supplier who ultimately said "you need to remove the whole assembly". When I asked how exactly I do that I was told "from inside the trunk". Thing is, it appears to me that you have to pull half the trunk lining out to get in there, which I aint doing for the sake of having LED's for licence plate lights.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Bought from here : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=160450508329

Pics : (old on the left new on the right)

Where the old comes out, the new aint going in...(no screws to take out any "assembly" either)

Hi acb. You do not need to tear apart the trunk liner. You need to take off the trunk lid which has five to six snap connectors from what I remember. You do need to apply a little bit of force, but do it slowly so you do not snap any off and break them. After that you can disconnect the light assembly and pull it out and switch your new lens and bulb on the existing assembly.

BTW, the snap connectors are at the top of the trunk lid and run horizontally across.

thanks Mikey I'll check it out - once the lining is away is it a plug and play or are we talking cutting/joining wires etc?

LOL funny I asked the same question! I ripped apart the whole trunk and couldnt figure it out. Then realized the trim on the outside of the trunk has to come off, so I took it to the dealer to install as I didnt wanna mess with the paint on my car.

The install on my E63 was as follows as I watched the tech take it apart

1. Remove liner on the inside of trunk to release the harness from the back of the stock bulb module, once you remove the 5 wiring harnesses 4 torx bolts and a bunch of push pins, you need to remove the exterior trim.

2. The chrome trim on the back of an E63 W211 comes off along with a cover that goes over the license plate late area. It snaps on and off. I didnt see how exactly he snaped it off. But I do know he had to take off the rear license plate

3. Once that piece is off the stock bulb assembly can slide out and then the led assembly will slide in.

4. Connect LED assembly to the harness in the trunk

5. Pop exterior trim back into place, put on license plate

6. Put back in trunk liner

GOOD TO GO! Cost me $60 at the dealer to have it done

These definitely are the best Tail LEDs they sell.

Had them installed for 9 months now, no issues.

The way to go over cheap bulbs and resistors.

To be honest acb it takes a total of 20 minutes and is very easy so if you are a DIY type of guy it will be no problem. Check out the photo I posted in the below thread.

Here is an installation guide that I ended up using. It's a bit of a pain (read: you need strong fingers) to push in the clips that hold in the OEM lights but other than that, it's a pretty straight-forward install

thanks Grimm - legend

One thing - the new light assembly doesnt screw into place - does it just push into the surround and stay there?

The entire housing just snaps in once the OEM one is disconnected from the harness and removed. Just plug the new one in and push it in (and check it before putting it all back together to make sure it works). You can also check the other housing to make sure it's seated correctly. It shouldn't be protruding any more than the original.
