Navigation CD
I've read threads where people mention that they have a 2010 navigation CD upgrades, i was wondering is there much benefit for me to go buy the latest CD and is it just a matter of ejecting the old and inserting the new?
the reason i ask is my wife is convinced that the NAV in the e55 takes her on less efficient routes as opposed to the garmin unit we also have. I find it hard to believe since we live in a major city with roads that have existed for many years...

You should be able to check the settings on your gps on what roads to take/avoid. Your problem is that the Garmin is set one way and the MB another. Updating the disk will not provide a more efficient way to get from point A to B, unless you live in a area that is undergoing major highway construction.
As for the update disk, all you do if take out the old one and insert the new one, nothing else. Since I just purchased my E320 in January, I purchased the 2010 DVD disk. I figure that I will update the DVD every two years.

With the newer discs, isn't there some sort of firmware update disc for the NAV as well? I thought I read somewhere that newer discs on older units required this other update?

I know that the newer Mercedes 2009-2011 do not use a NAV Disc, instead have a HD (Hard Drive) with all the information stored on it. You would need your local MB Dealership to update the software to your car. Just like any other GPS out there, its only as good as the software that's loaded on it. (Keeping up with the Jones's) so to speak. As the US road network is constantly changing, in urban areas.

it really depends on where you live. I have an 05E500 with the stock Navi disk and it shows me a lot of roads that are no longer there since we've had major roadwork around the bay. If you live in a high construction zone then you should update them, if you know the area don't worry about.

I got an updated Navteq DVD around March of '09 and the navvy has never taken me out of my way since then, or even before the upgrade. Other portable ones like my awesome Navigon, however, likes to take me on scenic tours around roundabouts and such no matter what route profile I pick.

MY 07 E63 of course has the older style SATNAV with DVD. My 10 C63 has the newest SATNAV, with updated information. I feel as though the V9.0 would be a benefit to me, as the software is newer and the information contained in it would help navigation easier.

The newer version has all the updates, but for those who are thinking it is a different interface than that is incorrect. It will look identical as before with no newer GUI and maps, yet updated roads, gas stations, restaurants, and etc.

Actually, you still have to buy the DVD. The DVD is just downloaded onto the hard disc so you don't have to keep the DVD in the car any longer. I just updated my wife's 09 C300 a few months ago...

I just put the latest NAV upgrade disk in my '06.... from how old the maps were, it was probably the original one from 2006.
Here's the latest part number. I literally bought this from the MB dealer about 2 weeks ago:
Nav DVD Version 2011
A211 827 35 65
Around $250 IIRC.
