Race cat internals blow loose!!

I have been hearing a rattle at start up for about a month now.. While working on my mid pipe, saw the brick had let loose. Hard to see in the picture (inlet side) but brick is shoved 3/4" back and crushed on the outlet side.. Have not checked the other side, yet but assume it is the same.. This is the kind of stuff that messes with power, tuning and racing.. Those are hard to check, if there is a problem too.

These are the common Magnaflow race cats. I replaced the one with another Magnaflow race cat but used a different part number this time..

LOL, yes or the Race cats suck! They are the 3" in and 3" out and should have been able to spread the flow out more than smaller cats. Hell, everyone uses these.

PS, sure hurts power with these suckers twisted up in the mid pipe..

yup, thats what happened to mines also and my friends, so we removed them, but eventully, 2nd ones will blow, and even the mufflers will start sounding that someting is crushed inside :S.

hard to find cats that can hold long enough, even the stanless steel ones.

Loose Cats!!

I've used only Random Tech cats , Never had a issue with them breaking loose internally. But I have tighten them up on the way to the Farm Damn Granite field stone From the looks of the Cutaway , there appears to be a exhaust flow direction. A larger air gap. on one side, , then the core fits tight to the taper on the other end, or at least the exhaust flow pushes it to the tapered down part _PTEngineering

These are the race cats that failed .. http://www.car-sound.com/02product/universal/595.asp

I used the 3" cats. They are metal spun cats and the gap you see, is the cat being crushed.. They are crimped inside the center section of the housing and should not be able to slide, unless they crush and slip out.. I have about 5K miles on these cats only.. No telling how long they have been crushed either.. I have been getting "post cat to lean codes" for a while now..

There is about a 3/8" gap around the diameter of the cat, where it has crushed.. Will cut apart and get better pictures pretty soon. Just did not have time , as I was 90 miles from the house doing this repair..

I replaced one cat with this model and will change the other in a week or so.. The angle on the neck, is what I needed .. http://www.car-sound.com/02product/d...niversal=59979

I guess they can't handle your boost, mine blew all the internals a week after installation...
