E55 then E63, now back to an E55
I need some info folks RE: wheel strength

I don't know a whole lot about this topic, but....

Are one piece, heavy, chrome 20 inch wheels (like Dub brand) TYPICALLY not very strong (i.e. bend easily on potholes) .....?

Alternatively - are 3-piece, FORGED, lighter (like HRE) wheels also typically Stronger - isn't that one of the benefits of getting them ? So if you have the same 20 inch tires and hit the same exact pothole as with Dubs referenced above, you are less likely to bend the more reinforced HRE wheel ?

Do other 3-piece Forged wheels typically share that same strength characteristic ?
Most importantly to me - AZA wheels like these I have:

Thx a lot for info

E55 w/ goods, Z32 Project underway
To be honest, I have bent very expensive multi piece wheels along with cheap wheels. The really cheap stuff will just fracture and not bend-something to consider. But a pothole is a pothole and no wheel will survive a major hit with low profile tires.

while there are obvious quality differences between brands, imho, bending a rim from potholes will have much more to do with tire profile than the rim itself.

Potholes can bend cast rims and forged rims. Bends on cast or forged rims can be straightened to a certain extent. Cast rims are of course weaker than forged, so they are more susceptible to cracking. However, with 3 piece wheels, you can always get a new inner/outer/center and your wheel will be good as new.

keep in mind that it will typically be much more expensive and take a hell of a lot longer to have a 3 piece wheel repaired than it will be to completely replace a cast wheel.

Their is currently no wheel on the market that can stand a pothole with low profile tires and survive without some carnage, whether its a bend, or fracture. The benefits of a three piece is that their modular, meaning parts can be replaced, as compared to a one piece wheel.

E55 AMG
Go 1 piece

1 piece wheels are definitely stronger. I had HREs and bent the hell out of all of them. All my ADV-1 or forged 1 pieces have been solid.
*** side note-- all wheels I have seen on my friends cars at the track, be they Porshe, Ferrari, Lambo, Hondas etc. all run 1 piece wheels.

I am in New York City all the time with my car and I have 20" rims with a 25 series profile on my car. I try to be careful but I don't really drive very slow so there are always times when I hit something or fall into a whole that is larger than I anticipated. I am glad that I have a very strong wheel on my car, it has really managed to put up with all teh abuse that I throw at it. The only thing I worry about in the city is the parking garage attendants scratching up the sides of my wheels when they park it. I tell them that all I really care about is the wheels and to please be careful with them and so far I have been very lucky.

I use a one piece Volk wheel and it has been extremely strong.

I have Fikse and Hartmann wheels for my 911 turbo, Weds 3 piece wheels on the E55 and and have not had any problems yet. The Hartmanns have been out of production, but there are sources to get parts. If not, Kodiak Racing can make custom inners/outers. I have worked on BBS Motorsport wheels and have been able to get inners and outers fairly easily at reasonable prices. It is just a PITA to dis/re-assemble them.
