Views on extended warranty quotes

I have an 07 E63 since new with around 24k miles on it. It's warranty period is up June 2011.

I just had occasion to use the factory warranty (steering wheel sensor replaced causing ESP to occasionally malfunction). That got me to asking the MB sales staff what the costs would be for an extended warranty.

I guess I have a problem when someone can't show me a list price and has to go off and write prices down on the back of their business card, but that's what he gave me. For coverage up to 75k miles (should be fine for me), 1 year for $3,450, 2 years for $3,898 and 3 years for $4,427.

He says the MB extended warranty is treated like regular warranty, same coverage, goes with the car if sold and no claim paperwork or deductibles.

Question is - are those reasonable prices? Got 9 months to decide I guess.

I fear expensive repairs on this car, although it hasn't really been in the shop at all. I had a Range Rover which wasn't a good experience out of warranty (pretty good within it!), so when I swapped that for a GL450 I got the extended warranty at the time of purchase. Just in 2 minds to fork out $4,427, although I do expect to keep the car (nothing new on the market I'd prefer :-().

Interested in views on pricing. Thanks!

Interestingly the MB warranty really represents a fair value.
Not an option for me so I shopped around. Given that Chrysler has finally come out of their comma and realized there is no money to be made covering AMG's, the alternatives are scary expensive...and just plain scary....lol.
Good luck!

Go for the 3 year plan. If you do not keep the car, it makes a great selling point. I just got my E55 last month and Fidelity has shelled out $2k+ in repairs since then. All I paid was $40 to transfer the warranty.

I have the same car with 33K miles and was in the same boat. I even went on the M5 forums to get a quote from Zurich which was supposed to be a great deal. Zurich was over $6K. Local MB dealer was $5100. I got it from another MB dealer for $4100. Seemed like the best deal without worrying about any problems with coverage.

Here were my quotes: Another 3 years or 75,000 miles: $3590. Another 3 years or 100,000 miles: $5290. My car is a 2009 with 19k on it.

Remember that you can get your money back if you sell the car or simply decide not to keep the warranty (pro-rated, of course.) So it does make sense to take the longest warranty. Also realize that the warranties are a 100% mark up product for the dealers. That's why your dealer just wrote them down on a card.... do your shopping and bounce prices off different dealers.

If you do buy one, be sure to start putting more miles on the car and get your money's worth (24k on a 2007 is pretty low.) The cars don't go bad just sitting, it's the mileage that wears out stuff.

EDIT: just so the OP knows, the above prices are for the original MBUSA extended warranty (exactly the same factory warranty, just extended) and not an aftermarket or third party warranty.

Avoid Motor Warranty Services of North America, Chicago. They are resold by companies like Penske and other indy dealers. 3yr/36K miles is about $3000 but they do whatever they can to not cover a repair, including renaming a part in their "books" so they can tell you it's not covered. Get ready to argue for every claim you submit. They also only cover up to $80 an hour for labor and they don't tell you this upfront, and we all know most shops charge over $100 per hour. So the $50 deductible can easily go up to $200-300 per job depending on what you have. It's companies like these that make you wish your engine and tranny blew at the same time.
