THE HONEYMOON IS OVER

In other words after owning my E55 for a month some thoughts and concerns. First I must acknowledge this forum for providing very articulate and incite full information, once you get past the sarcasm the members here are very knowledgeable.
It has been over a month now that I have been using my 05 for just playtime and a few things have me wondering, this has to be one of the noisiest engines I have ever owned, even my blown ac cobra although louder does not have the clattering and whining at start up. It does settle down and after a few minutes on the road it becomes fairly quite and stays quite, everything works as it should it just has this initial whine that sounds like a power steering pump being stressed and a whole assortment of mechanical sounds.
It is a bit like an orchestra tuning up but when it settles down it is very serene until you decide to play the 1812 overture and put the hammer down. I also noticed that if I fill it up with gas and park it in the garage there is a strong odor of gasoline until I get a few miles on it, this is a bit disconcerting as I can visualize my garage blowing up! And damn I have to get used to that console shift lever, I find myself sitting at a light with my hand on the shifter and I accidentally drop it down a few gears and the next thing I know I am hitting redline and everyone around me thinks the race is on.
All in all it is an amazing car, the styling is timeless and it can be so tastefully customized. No offense to the E63 but I like the softer contours of the 55. I would think the W211 E55 will go down as a icon in its class. I may decide to keep this car for a while if I can get used to the unnerving sounds it makes when cold.

I cannot agree with you on the sound. I have no sounds to speak of, but maybe thats just me.

Ya man cold starts are just that, cold noisy starts. Nothing to be concerned over.

And as far as the gas goes I've just learned to fill it up with about 15 gallons and I've never encountered the smell again.

In the end I hope you do enjoy the car. It's been a great investment in my life and puts a smile on my face every time I don't have to turn a key to start her up.

It is a Cacophony

Well in a few more months, you might be able to identify the sounds of all the systems that start up with the engine.

You need to get your fuel sender (in tank) checked out, there is a recall on them.

Here is a fun read,

You forgot the electrical ticks that engulf you inside the cabin at start up. The engine noises are normal too for those who have it. I ran all those sounds by 2 dealerships and 2 indies and told them I'd pay to get it fixed, but all said it's the nature of the beast.

The only noise/activity I dislike is the vibrating brake pedal. Only happens every so often, but it's like wth are you doing? STOP THAT.

LOL!! It is funny that you said that, because I like the sharper front of the E63 because I find it more aggressive. The E55 is a beautiful car though. Plus, the ability to make the E55 wicked fast with the supercharged engine is pretty nice. Enjoy your car!

An E55 is like a woman, it will give you wood and immense pleasure one moment, then it will cost you pay BIG TIME coin the next

Sorry to ask the obvious but you are only filling to first click right? Not taking little stabs with the gas pump to "fill it to the rim"
I am sure you are not so make sure you have someone pull that backseat and take a peek at that fuel tank. Need to at least have it looked at. I never have that happen on mine.

The noises....try driving a Gallardo with E Gear. We were laughing at red lights. Sounded like a friggin pit crew was working right behind you with all the whizzes and buzzes from pumps etc.
