I just put in 9 quarts of oil in my E55 but now it says to reduce oil level. Is it okay to have just a little bit more than suggested in my engine?

I put 8.75 and it was fine. Most people will say anywhere from 8.75 - 9 and you're good.

Having said that, too much oil is just as bad as not putting enough oil.

I think with 9 you are OK. Drive it a bit and see if the warning goes away ...

How did you drain it? If you drained both front and rear crankcase plugs you are OK. Remember that your supposed to use new plugs every time you remove the crankcase plugs. If you used a vacuum suction tube, then you missed getting some old oil, probably close to a quart (unless you had the car jacked up on an angle).
