According to the reading I've done, yes 285 is the highest you should be able to do, not for the fronts obv. I have 285rears for my summer setup.

Will a 285/35/18 tire mount on a 9" wide rim? Yes. Is it right? No. The minimum specified rim width for a 285 tire is 9.5". By mounting it on a narrower wheel, you're pinching in the sidewalls and causing them to be loaded in a manner not intended by the tire manufacturer. I've actually seen tires fail at high speed driving events where tires too wide for the rim were mounted. It's really a tire safety issue, and that's one area I won't take chances on.

if your lowered you will rub with a 285. Some tires might be slightly thinner. I recently went to a 275 from the stock 265 on my E55 and it fits perfectly with my car being slammed.
