Gas Guzzler Tax - $1,700.
List price $76,000, gas guzzler tax $1,700.
On an unrelated subject my wife was in London over Easter and picked up a brochure on the AMG line fron the Mercedes dealer in Mayfair. Nice hard bound brochure, similar in size to the owner's manual for the 210 series. It has multiple page pictures and specs on each of the AMG models including the E55. Well worth picking up if you or someone you know is over there.
I posted before seeing you had already disclosed the gas guzzler post. Apologize for the duplication. Mine's a stripper compared to yours - I just got the cd changer, V-60, and rear window shade. I have the latter on my 94 E500 and have found it very useful when parked in the sun.
To put the pricing in perspective the 1994 E500 was $80,500 with 315 hp so $81,000 for 476 hp is less expensive on a per hp basis.
With the flared front fenders the E500 was a little more differentiated from the rest of the then E-class line than is the current E55 and 124 build quality is definitely above the 210 and 211.

The reason Mercedes and BMW cars are priced so much lower now is because of the price competition from Lexus and Infiniti that entered the US market in 1989.
