Question Replacing Instrument Cluster Light Bulb

Attempting to remove the Instrument Cluster on my '97 E320 to replace a burned out bulb. I've learned that although a special OEM tool is required (which frees the clips that hold the cluster), I've read in previous MB postings of an optional technique which uses 2 thin sheets of metal. If you're familar with this task & the 'sheets of metal' tool, can you reply with a further description? If the task isn't too difficult, I'd like to save some dollars and do it myself.

'04 Silverado Z71 - sold all my Benzes and need another!
I have attached a picture of the OEM tools, which you can make yourself with a thin wire hanger or buy the set on line. Here is the link to a set being sold on ebay right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=35625
