Replacing Instrument Cluster Light Bulb

Attempting to remove the Instrument Cluster on my '97 E320 to replace a burned out bulb. I've learned that although a special OEM tool is required (which frees the clips that hold the cluster), I've read in previous MB postings of an optional technique which uses 2 thin sheets of metal. If you're familar with this task & the 'sheets of metal' tool, can you reply with a further description? If the task isn't too difficult, I'd like to save some dollars and do it myself.
