I was the author of the dead body in trunk thread, and my dealer tried to figure the issue out while my car was still under warranty. They replaced damn near every suspension part out back, and the noise never went away. Then, the service manager took me for a ride in two different E500's they had on the lot, and they both did the exact same thing. I've never had a suspension issue on my car, but that noise has always, and will always be there. It's just the nature of the suspension in these cars. It only happens on the rebound, while driving slowly over a speed bump. That's the only time it ever happens but it's 100% reproducible.

The install is stupid easy...you should be able to get them for under $800 in aboveallmotorwerks.com.

While it seems to be VERY common, it CAN be fixed. Just swap out the air struts for brand new ones. I'm not entirely sure what was done to your car...but I've seen others local to me have the same problem and by swapping out the airbags for new ones the problem went away 100% of the time. I just can't justify spending $1800 for two new airbags just to get rid of the cluck which I rarely hear anyways.

With the ELM installed, I've noticed that the clunk is there when at stock height, but mostly not there when lowered. Anyone else notice the same thing?

fwiw i had similar rear end clunking noises... I thought it was the shocks and was about to order some new ones but decided to them off and inspected the old ones first and they were fine, but while i was under the car i noticed one of the motor mounts was completely blown out

so i ordered new motor mounts and i replaced them a few weeks ago and no more clunking in the rear-end

It's not the subframe, its the subframe bushings. I would definitely have these rechecked, because i think that is where your noise is generating from. I had my rear sub frame bushings replaced after 40K all under warranty, thank God.

Sounds like the rear torsion bar is loose, this is common on many Mercedes models. This will cause a periodic clunking sound.
Tighten up the bolts with some locktite, should do the trick. (see illustration)

Does this apply if you only encounter the problem at normal or high speed? I only get the thud from the passenger side rear at normal road speeds (55mph+). If the patch of road road is rough enough, it almost feels like the rear takes a little hop which can be a little unsettling at times . When I go over rough areas it feels like the car is rocking side to side instead of just going up and down.

mine seems to happen at low speeds, and my rear traction is a lil squirrley...I don't like how loose it is when nailing it in a curve.

What's the best place to get shocks? Or should I go coil overs...Money is an issue

ebay is your best bet.

i think the thud is more prevalent at low speeds.

Ok, Ill start the search...

I may use STAR to lower it down a bit as well in the mean time to see if it changes, the *** end looks like it is maxed out and never really settles down.

Bro my other ride is a 1986 Chevy silverado with a race built 383 stroker with a locker. Squirrelly rearends are easy to deal with if you know how to drive. I just prefer for my daily driver to be tight.

Just find it surprising that you find it necessary to "nail it in a curve" while driving around on public roads. Are all AMG owners supposed to be of this mentality? Its is nice to have a straight line truck with lots of power, do you "nail it " in the curves just for smiles and giggles.

Yes.

Are you really going to attempt to lecture me on my driving? If I want to hit it to accelerate out of a corner I will and this car should handle it just fine. I shouldn't feel any lateral movement when doing so...meaning something is not right.

And my truck isn't built for straight line go fast either ;-)

Now sorry for the unintentional post high jack. I will be lowering the beast today via star when I get home to see if it helps resolve some if the issue.

Sooooo. Change out the rear shocks or air Springs? Lowering helped some but it's still there.
