Sonofa...E55 pants on the ground.....Rear Airmatic?

Hey fellas. I have been on here a long time, but I do not post very often. My E55 has been very reliable so far in the 3+ years I have owned it, but now i have a pretty major issue. The thing has 47k miles on it and the other night I walked up to it in the 3rd stall of the garage and the back end is on the ground. The back end has gone down before, but I always just turn the car on and it lifts up in about 10 seconds. This also only happens if I do not drive it for a 2-3 week period.
Well I turned her on and she would not even try to come up. What do you think the issue is? I would assume a rear airmatic if one side was listing and not the other, but both sides are equally down. Is this a component in the system that is bad? Like the block under the headlight? COuld it be the compressor? Who has replaced a rear airmatic? I think Yacht Master has done a replacement guide, but I can't find it anywhere using search.

I would certainly appreciate anybody's thought on the matter since I do not have a warranty as of a few months ago. Speaking of warranty, does anyone still sell them?
Thanks,
zxlr88

From my guess it the rear airmatic air spring, I don't think its your air compressor, as the rest of the car rises when turned on. It is a failed air spring, check with arnott industries to see if the sell them, I know that they sell the front air struts. I have both my rear air spring replaced under warranty, but that doesn't do you any good. Sorry...

Wouldn't the car sag to one side if it was just one air spring? I kind of doubt both of them went out the same day. I called Arnott yesterday and they do not sell rear airmatic replacements for the E55. Hmmm. Any other ideas?

I did find a replacement for about $543, but I do not know for sure if that is the issue. Arnott did say they are working on getting a rear replacement part manufactured.

Is your car slammed on both sides in the rear? If it was one air spring then yes, it would be leaning to the side. It could be a chaffed air line, I doubt the air compressor, but you never know, the distribution block (solenoid). The best solution is to hook it up to star Diagnostic System (SDS) and read the code, it will definitely tell you what is wrong with each component. Find a local independent Mercedes shop, and see if they have Star to diagnose your issue. You might need a flat bed to move it, I would want to risk damaging it further.

rear ride height sensor or a leak in the rear loop somewhere.... but my guess is the sensor. Only one of them and affects both rears equally.

+1

There's a single sensor on the rear (two in front.) Either the sensor goes out, or even more often there's corrosion at the connector. If the OP is in a climate with crappy weather apparently it can be more prone to corrode.

OK. I will have to take a gander at the sensor. The front is up and the rear may have a had a slow leak before, but maybe it is the sensor now. I am downright **** about the cleanliness of my cars and right now in Wyoming it is cold and nasty, but the garage is cold too but dry. Where is the sensor located?

Technically, the odds of failing both rear struts would be pretty slim. I would have to agree with sensor too...

+2, doubt both bags went out at the same time.

The DIY Thread on washer lowering has info on where the rear sensor is..

Here is a picture from that thread:

It's the black plastic looking thing at 9:00 on the picture.

Sensor is between the diff and the rear driver's wheel but closer to the diff side. It's easier to see it when you're facing the rear of the car and it's a tight fit. It is held in by 2bolts that would go right where the 2 holes are in the pic posted above.

Umm Yeah. So this is the thing. I walked into my garage this afternoon and the rear end was up and it was working perfectly. Hmm. (I guess I am going to replace the relay to the compressor and hope that fixes it.) Now it works. Nothing is different. Gremlins. AHH!

That sucks. My car was sitting in the garage unused for months and the battery died. Came back and it was sitting on the ground. Almost **** myself but I was glad it came back up. I hope it's the sensor as many here have suggested. Good luck.
