Yes, activating SBC hold requires the use of STAR DAS which is MB's proprietary diagnostics software that runs on a PC and communicates with the vehicle via a multiplexer unit that connects to the PCs serial port and to the car's OBD2 port. Various members have STAR as well as of course the dealer.

For an 06, SBC Hold could be activated but not SBC Stop, which I've heard could be enabled only in earlier model years. Dealers may not do it even if dictated the steps for liability concerns since it does concern a braking feature MB specifically disabled for our U.S. Es. Whereabouts is the car located?

I'm in San Francisco. Wow thanks for all that info btw. The hold feature is what I'd like the most I think

Would like to have helped if you were on the other coast. Perhaps worth it to invest the 3-500 for a STAR to do this and other adjustments / diagnostics in the future.

SBC hold totally rocks!! I have a e400 loaner currently.... it has it and i use it all the time.

Maybe there's someone in the bay area that has STAR and could do it for me. I'd pay for his/her time.

So I called three dealerships and three independent shops and none of them would do it. All claiming liability issues. Is there anyone in the Bay Area who has the star diagnostic tool and could do this? Thanks!!

I was able to activate SBC Hold & Stop on my '04 through DAS. It's been years now and I know there were some thoughts that it could not be activated from '04-'06. I believe I was able to get to the coding in Developer mode. Also i was able to activate the "panic brake lights" which cause the brake lights to flash rapidly when maximum braking is applied.

How did you get the panic brake lights though?

I could have sworn that required an 07 and newer rear SAM. I don't remember seeing that option in developer for my 06. Might have to look again.

SBC-H works in my 06 but only after I switched my Central Gateway to ROW. Give the brake pedal a solid jab while stopped and it will display on the cluster SBC-H and hold the brakes till you give it another jab or just step on the gas pedal. SBC-S on the other hand ended with 04 model year and I believe that is enabled directly on the SBC module. The programming on the module was changed after 04.

The flashing brake or hazard lights on hard braking was available after SBC equipped cars (07 and newer) but is controlled by the Rear SAM. You could potentially replace an older rear SAM with a newer one which supports the feature.
