If you are patient and resourceful enough, you can find (google) the update cd and the 2008 DVD iso torrents to "test" and see if you like the new updates before buying them

Somewhere buried in one of the nav menus there is a way to select your precise current location and set it as a preset for later on. Not sure if it uses a gps coordinate or not, bit I think it would be more accurate than choosing the address from the range of house or street numbers that the nav system offers you.
