2003 MB E55 AMG
All records are present, and maintence was performed at big MB dealership. Overall exterior of car appears to look good.
65,000 miles, the car drives straight and engine pulls very hard. Everything appears to be mechanically stable under the hood.
2 issues that are known.
1) The keyless go works intermittenly. The dealer claims that there is some sort of card that needs to be present in the car...? Well when I got it to work randomly they then said they didn't know really what was wrong with it.. could it be the key fob or something a bit more serious.. If it were a short I could think this could get pricey to fix. any thoughts would be great.
2) Known malfunction, the Tire Pressure Monitoring system malfunction pops up on the speedo display and says visit workshop!.. On this one the dealer claims that the sensors need to be replaced and says that they can be had for about 150 a piece in regards to replacing them...Any truth to this?
One more thing that kind of bothers me.. The transmission has been replaced under warranty. could this be a good thing given the age of the car or possibly a flag...
any thoughts/ opinions would be greatly appreciated
thanks MBworld,
Carlton
It's well worth the money to get the TPMS fixed. I was hesitant at first and was considering just checking it the old fashioned way (with a tire pressure gauge), but am very pleased that I purchased the sensors. The sensor unit itself could be bad, but most likely it's just the sensors. I had the visit workshop message and the sensors were all I needed.
No card is used on a 2003 for the keyless go, just the key is needed. Make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection and ask them to see if they can diagnose the keyless go. Could be as simple as the battery in the key going bad, but don't count on it.
Does it come with a warranty? If the car looks really mint and the driveline is tight, I wouldn't let the trans affect the sale to much. It's just hard to get these cars in really pristine shape and not pay for it. Your much better off in the long run buying a better car and spending a bit more up front. Good luck, these cars are very worth it.
