Play in front wheel

Last night while doing engine and transmission oil change on my car we (me and Evolved8) discover that there are some plays in the front driver side. Just wondering if that's the sign of bad wheel bearing or balljoint? Thanks in advance.

Was the play vertical or horizontal play? I had a similar issue and if you jack the car up and push upwards on the wheel and you hear a bump it's more than likely your ball joint.

I finally have a chance to check the play in the front wheel today. The play was horizontally. Very minor. Also I was check the ball joints, there are three of them, one on top and two on the bottom. Which one should I replace? Thanks.
