Post E55/E63 Part Weight Thread

Hey guys this thread is quite appropriate now after BenzoBoi's epic coilover conversion. I know some of you have had accidents or removed parts from their cars etc. Let's list the weight of stock parts on the W211, it can be any part just list a part that you have weighed on an accurate scale. Do this if you need to change something or mod something. Thing is we can't all dismantle our cars to weigh the parts because we need to drive them
List weight in lb or kg which ever is available to you at the time.

http://www.convertunits.com/from/lb/to/kg

Here's a converter.

YES! I like these kind of threads. Too bad I don't have a freaking scale.

I'll definitely be posting up the weights of the airmatic stuff in here when I get the link to all the pics during the install.

Definitely a great idea for a thread.

If there were a huge aftermarket of carbon fiber parts available, this would be a really fun exercise...

At some point, it becomes cheaper to get more speed by "adding lightness" than by chasing more HP. I forget the exact formula, but if you can lose 100lbs off the car it will have a measurable effect.

A set of lightweight rotors, CF hood, trunk and a simpler set of front seats (all that dynamic and ventilated stuff is nice, but it must weigh a TON) and there's probably 300lbs in weight savings...

Unfortunately, adding lightness can be just as expensive as adding speed parts.

Jrcart has done a lot of this so if he will share his experience this thread will have a very good start. I think he replaced every bolt with titanium as his mods went on. Other threads have details about battery, spare tire, wheels, seats, hood, trunk, pano roof. Perhaps people that have tried this in earnest will post their results, heaviest parts replaced, etc. Find a path to an E63 with a 3,500 lb. curb weight would lead to the true beast.

I'm going to purchase a scale to weight the items I've removed from my car to see how much they weigh.

Stock e55 mufflers weigh 20lbs each! Stock e63 mufflers weigh 9lbs each!

E55 2nd cat and resonators must have weighed 30-40lbs, sorry didn't measure.

Problem is the weight saving potential, it has heaps of that. Even though it's 4000-4100 pounds the suspension, wheels, battery, seats etc are heavy. 400 pounds can be lost with only seat change but full interior. The real problem is justifying the cost for the savings. Don't get me wrong the savings would be invaluable to the car's performance. Sure power can make it faster in a straight line but think of fuel consumption, handling, braking and also speed. I don't think the car can be reduced to 3500 pounds with a full interior (except buckets), people have already outlined that the body parts don't weigh much as they're made of aluminum. Plus nobody really makes parts for this car, so it would have to be custom, $$$$! I haven't even seen full Ti exhausts for it.

Still, the thread is useful because at least people can put up parts weights for information's sake. I know I'd do some mods as long as they get some great savings and don't cost much. According to BenzoBoi the Airmatic saves the most for the money spent. I guess that's one of the most viable options. I've seen people rip up their car to do work on it so if you can weigh the parts. I personally will when I do the Airmatic swap, trying to find a good shop to do it and that STAR issue.

Do the light weight batteries effect the electronics in any way. Does it go flat faster, there must be a downside to the huge weight loss.

The ability to keep the electronics going when the engine is off is diminished, especially if you want to start up the engine after a while of running on the battery only. The largest problem would be winter cold starts which may just not happen on a small battery.

The spare and tools weigh 50 pounds not 30 if that's what you meant by the trunk junk. I too want to know the weight of the front seats.

The spare weights 20 to 25 lbs... the tools and other "junk" is maybe another 10 lbs.

The CLS63 front seat was 65 lbs.... I'm not sure if it's the same seat as in the E55 or not though

65 lbs? WOW, that's heavy. How much do the Black seats weigh, not the comfortable ones, I'm talking about the bucket seats.

My E55 front seat came in at 63-65 lbs. Don't remember the exact number.

I want that one for my passenger seat!!!!

My Status bucket seat comes in at 12 lbs.

Don't Status seats look a little "ricey" in a Mercedes, especially the Status logo, it's more of a tuner look. I'd love to have Ferrari Scuderia seats but that's out of the question. The status seats would at least need to be de-badged, Mercedes star embossed and black in color. Are they comfortable though? At 12lbs that's insanely light. So when you say 65 lbs for the 55 seats, is that with the rails or just the seat because if it's with the rails how much does the Status weigh with the rails, if not then that Status seat is EXTREMELY LIGHT!!!

I just got a REALLY good deal on my seat so I took it. Figured why not for track days. The one I have is black cloth with kevlar backing. The seat itself is 12 lbs. With the side mounts, rails and the base mount, I believe the total came out to 19-20 lbs? No more then that for sure though...

Yes but when you said the 55s stock seats at 65 lbs, was that without the rails or with because if it's without then we also measure the Status without.

The 65 lbs was the WHOLE front seat. I took it all out, including the rails and all. All that was left before I put the bucket seat in, was the wiring for the "brain" and the power to the seat.
