E55: 25 MPG HWY??

1 Attachment(s)
Yes, you can. My trip last month. Vegas to Los Angeles. Lots of hills. Cruise control most of the way @ 74mph. Driving in C. Rear tires were almost bald and inflated around 40 psi. I use Mobil-1 15-50. I think that is most of the variables.

You can see from the pictures -- my car gained about .5mpg in 20 miles of driving. The car was steadly gaining MPG when i reached the L.A. area... probably the lower altitude and constant level roads.

I arrived to my destination about 30 miles after the last picture and my MPG was 24.7 I was too tired to take another picture. So, if you drove slower and maybe a little longer - You can make it to 25 mpg.

damn nice! I didn't think it was possible haha

mikey33 04-11-2011 04:01 AM

Wattttttttt?!

Ali_E55 04-11-2011 05:30 AM

cool.

it is true

on HW and less than 120km. the S/C is off and it doesn't consume gas.

viper04 04-11-2011 06:53 AM

Nice, car with performance and good gas mileage can't beat that!

06E55 04-11-2011 07:28 AM

Yep, I make a ~215 mile commute to Myrtle Beach every so often to check on investment properties and I average about 23-24mpg cruising 8mph over the limit... You can actually get better gas mileage without using cruise control, as your vehicle isn't forced to drive at that particular speed.... Now, on pretty flat roads, that may not be the case...

pullejo 04-11-2011 08:03 AM

I was happy when I averaged over 20 mpg on a round trip to Birmingham. So much so I actually took pictures.

The one thing my buddy who drives an '09 E60 M5 *****es about is that he rarely gets over 10 mpg. He does do all city driving...but 10 mpg? My Avalanche with a 496 big block in it got better than that (well...about 12) and it could tow 12,000 lbs...and had a GVW of over 8,000...

The power/mileage ratio of our cars is actually very impressive.

Yacht Master 04-11-2011 08:42 AM

Impressive, I have only been able to get 21-22 @ 72mph on gas with ethanol and that can reduce mileage by 10%.
It is my understanding that some (good) tunes will not only give you more power but can improve your MPG.

GT-ER 04-11-2011 08:53 AM

I always average 15-16mpg on my way to work and 19-20 on my way back ( late at night with zero traffic ). I have yet to even see my mpg touch more than 21mpg.

skratch77 04-11-2011 08:59 AM

My car is around 13-15 mpg average.having an a/f in the mid 10s don't help much either but its worth the piece if mind.

E55Dimon 04-11-2011 09:03 AM

I have never ever seen the 2 as the first digit on mine.
Props.

wsybert 04-11-2011 09:56 AM

19.8 is my best... and that was trying. I would love to see 20, just for grins. Maybe if I put some bicycle tires on it and pump them to 60psi...

novae500 04-11-2011 10:15 AM

nice, good to see mpg over 20 on the E55.

theeddie 04-11-2011 01:32 PM

when my woman drives me home from boozing all night she some how get 21mpg
i get 14 on the way doh!

Forrest Gump 9 04-11-2011 02:19 PM

Haha, I knew it's possible. When my car had RT 168 pulley and tune I was able to get 24 mpg on highway. Cruise control at 77 mph and comfort in the tranny. Now with the 180 pulley, I have not seen the 2-.

I have the same setup... I've never seen the 20's... Even trying. Now, I have to say that I rarely travel the hwy, but on a recent trip I was only able to get 19.8. C, Cruise, and interstate. I may have been able to get 20+, but got off the turnpike and into some traffic, then lost interest and wanted my heavy foot back. 24??? I can't see it on my car. Oh well.

CharlyE500 04-11-2011 04:29 PM

For 30 miles freeway i get 21MPG without traffic..... with some traffic 17MPG
Average speaking about 17 to 18MPG

BenzoBoi 04-11-2011 04:41 PM

wally AMG 04-11-2011 04:49 PM

yep... I got some similar... check this post ... https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...sues-none.html

Quattrodude 04-11-2011 04:54 PM

Maybe he was being towed? LOL - just kidding, most i have been able to get is about 22-23mpg super gentle driving.

But I'm still happy putting gas and feeding the beast when it wants it.

You have to check this picture !!! 32.4 :D !!! drive 60 - 65 MPH :zoom:

guysandiego 04-11-2011 05:43 PM

you only drove 25 miles --- it could be downhill for all i know -- it is certainly impossible for our cars.

guysandiego 04-11-2011 05:49 PM

Going for MPG was my challenge during this long drive. It was pretty relaxing and a tiny bit exciting.
I find it Too difficult to challenge yourself by beating a fast time... its more nerve racking -- watching for cops and that junk. Not to mention if you drive too fast -- you will need to stop for gas... slowing you down alot.

Anyhow - My tune probably aided the MPG and turning off the cruise control when going downhill.. dont need that damn braking.

I know you can all do it under the right circumstances.

sunil517 04-11-2011 05:52 PM

07 E63 I get around 24.7 -26.8

VA to FL around 78-80 mph 26.9 with 3 adults on 19s
stop and go maybe 11-14 mpg. really good on the HW.

guysandiego 04-11-2011 05:58 PM

E63 -- different trannie -- it is supposed to get better MPG -- but really awesome for a 500hp car
