You're talking about the bottom half right..? That I suspect is because it gets moist on start up and then attracts any carbon or exhaust fumes to it. Overall the tips getting dirty because they are stuck out in our aero wash. Same way my trunk front and rear bumper can be covered in dust from a run and the rest of car is still clean...By the way, I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night

I guess I should have been more clear in my first post; I was referring to the tip as a whole. Inside, outside (all around) is covered in darkness.

fwiw, mine are like citylight says, just the bottom half. The tips shouldn't be entirely covered with carbon/soot/blackness.....

btw, my P-cars do the same (bottom half gets dirty) but they're not as noticeable since the tips aren't rolled.

Need some help guys

Hey guys, I need some help. I just picked up a 2008 E63 with 60K on it. I looked at the Exhaust tips and they are literally all black. Looks like the owner never cleaned them. I washed it yesterday thinking it would come off but it didn't. The carbon is literally burnt on the tips. any ideas and help. Thanks
