better MPG E55 or E63?

All things equal, E55 or E63 gets better MPG? I currently drive a 63 and avg. 18 mpg, I do not drive the car hard and pretty much cruise around town and hwy.

The 7 speed tranny of the E63 should get you better gas mileage. Mercedes claims around 20% over the earlier 5 speed of the 55.

The 5 speed is: 3.59 2.19 1.41 1.00 0.83
The 7 speed is: 4.377 2.859 1.921 1.368 1.00 .82 .728

fwiw, late today I was getting 19 mpg driving on back roads for around 5 hours (no freeway) and doing anywhere from 50 to 80 mph and with several right foot mashes and dropping to lower gears. Plus some stop and go through a few small towns.

With the E63 you can get anywhere from 20 to 10 depending on your mood. Freeway driving can get you pretty good mpg since the engine spins just under 2k rpm at 75-80 mph with the 7 speed.

I don't know about the E55's, but when I drive my E63 aggressively, I average 10 mpg. I hate to see the fuel gauge drop like a rock, but it sure is fun to feel the power of the M156, especially between 4K and 6K rpm when it really comes alive.

My E55 is right in that same ballpark. I've seen as low as 9.6mpg after an evening of some heavy throttle. But I just recently did a 860 mile road trip and averaged 20.6mpg with about 125 miles of city driving and the balance hwy at around 65-70mph. 60mph seems to be the best milage speed in my E55, I've seen 23+mpg at 60 and it drops to 21/22 above that.

They both suck. My NSX gets almost 30 MPG, the E63 is a joke compared to that. But the
E63 is a rocketship, so I could give a rats *** what the
MPG is.

Thanks. In my opinion, 18+ mpg when cruising is pretty darn good for a car w/ 500 hp.

So is the verdict that the 63 gets better mpg than the 55?

No, there is no meaningful difference between the two in MPG. Both will top out at ~22MPG highway if driven gently. Both deliver ~15MPG city if driven like you mostly want to retain your license. Both deliver 10MPG if driven like you stole it.

FWIW, the 2006 E55 is rated by the EPA at 13/19, and the 2007 E63 at 12/19.

Doubt if there's much difference between them. Suspect the 55 might be better at lower revs while the 63 takes the honours under full-bore acceleration. These cars wear their fuel consumption almost like a badge of honour...! If you want low consumption get a prius...

I still have my original Monroney sticker for my 2009 E63 and the "EPA Fuel Economy Estimates" section says:

City MPG
13
Expected range for most drivers
10-16 MPG

Highway MPG
20
Expected range for most drivers
16-24 MPG

AMG says the 7G-Tronic allows for a 1 litre per 100 kilometer improvement over the older 5 speed. Freeway driving will be better.

I do not have an E55 but I can comment on the fuel mileage of our E63. The 7 speed really adds to the performance and mileage. We are in SoCal and frequently drive between Pasadena and San Diego. When traffic is not gridlocked the E63 is always between 21 and 23 mpg, I have the cruise set at 80mph. On the flip side just local driving around the area is usually in the 13 to 14 mpg range. For reference the same freeway trip in our SL600 V12TT is always at 19 to 21 mpg. I feel the difference is the taller 7th gear in the E63 vs the 5 speed in the V12. Recently the left side ignition module failed on the SL600 and I drove it 80 miles on the freeway to the dealer. Running on 6 cylinders, CEL light on and no turbo's the car was a dog but it was late at night and was on cruise control at 80mph the whole trip. The mileage was 27mpg! Too bad Mercedes does not offer a cylinder deactivation system!

I make that trip about once per week. I have the cruise engaged about 1/3 of the distance. When I take the S65 it delivers 16 to 17mpg. In fairness there is something totally addictive about the S65 that results in my driving faster, changing lanes more often and smiling even more than with the other cars! The best long distance mileage I ever saw in the S65 was 18.6 on a round trip to Phoenix. I had the cruise engaged about 90% of the distance at about 82mph. Could probably get better mileage at lower speeds but why? Fuel is the cheapest expense for the S65. Brakes and rotors all around every 30k miles and spark plugs at two per cylinder that requires partial disassembly make the gas bill insignificant. I am not complaining, the driving experience makes it all worthwhile.

Just got back from a 550mi drive today. Average speed of 75-85 mph. I filled up the tank and calculate mpg to be 22.9. I am not complaining!

Around town tho, it's a solid 17-19 mpg depending on how trigger happy I get on take offs and from the lights.
