Transmission shifting Question

I am not very used to driving an automatic after having driven sticks most of my life ... I had a shifting question. My car seems to be retarded ....

1. When I am in a 30 mph roll and floor it, I would expect the car to downshift and haul *** ... it doesn't seem to want to downshift at all. I thought it should have some kind of kick down.

2. When I do an aggressive pull, it goes all the way up to redline sometimes ... if I back off the gas pedal anytime before it shifts ... it stays in that gear .. the revs come down, then it shifts really hard.

I have tried Comfort and Sport modes, sneaky reset, reset using MB star. The transmission is serviced regulary and the fluid is at the right level. Not sure if this is normal? Anything else I should try? Thanks!

I can answer 2 for ya. Benz built in GOBS of babysitting features in this car. The car is always thinking and trying to figure out what you are doing. When doing a hard pull, the car goes into a "race" type of mode and will try to hold the car in that gear thinking you maybe are on a road course and need to hold the car in gear around a corner etc.

To get the car to "relax" and tell it you are not racing, I bump the stick once to the right. Almost like you are telling it to knock it off!

Some guys love it....some just can't stand the babysitting.

for question #1, the e55 does have a kickdown, you just have to push the pedal all the way to the floor until you feel the pedal "click"... you have to push the pedal beyond what you may think is floored at first...

i was a bit annoyed by the tranny just like you when i first got it as this is the first automatic car i had in my life so for the first few months i was driving around yelling at my car "what the F**K are you doing!!!? You're not doing what i am telling you to!!!..." lol but after getting used to it and figuring out how to make it go the way i want, its nice to not have to constantly feather a clutch in an hour worth of stop and go traffic

#1 BMW has the same setup

when you floor it .....you are not flooring it you have to try to push it out the car. Its like a 2 step system ..semi floor.. and then Floored....
the second step is what cause the trans to kick down.

Thanks for the responses guys ... I actually did notice the extra step switch ... but only a couple of days ago ... it didn't seem to do anything! Maybe I will try it again ... thanks also to those that PMed me saying TCU can also be reprogrammed for different shift points.

30mph is also a tough speed. It's pretty high for first (spin/traction control), so it probably prefers second gear and the fat torque
