When Ordering New Key......
Remember when they did away with the black keys in 07 for that new style - and that was all you could get?
ONLY WONDERING, if anyone knows - if one were to order a new key today, would it be the 2011 style (chrome but lighter, more plastic) or the older heavier chrome key?

I just got a new one, and it's pretty slick looking. I believe it's the new keyless, that are smooth, no raised buttons. It's interesting because my wife has a new ML550, and her's looks almost the same, but her buttons are raised. These keys have the chrome on either side too.

If you order a new key, you will most certainly get the new version key. As the old black ones are no longer produced.

I believe all the keys that come in are now the colored/raised version.

Ok, I suppose you get what you get, but here's both new keys.
The one on the left is "standard", the one on the right is key-less go. I learned this as the dealership at first ordered me a new one on the left, which didn't work with keyless, the second time they ordered the one on the right. The left one is for my wife's ML550, right is my E55.

Got ya. I guess that's just for replacement keys, new cars use the left key and keyless go works fine.
Like you said, you get what you get. I don't think there are any choices for style of key.

Well the dealership you called is wrong. I just went through this, so I know what I'm talking about.
The dealership actually ordered me the key on the left and it worked, so I physically had the key, saw it with my own eyes. Matter of fact because we had two keys that looked identical but for two different cars I whited out the panic of one to tell them apart. The key however would only work when used on the dash. So clearly it works on pre-2009 cars with no key-less.
So, they ordered me another and that was the one on the right, which now works both with keyless and in the dash.

I think the key on the right is better.
Water can not get into the button opening as the newer key on the left.
Plus it is a flat slick unit that just slide into your pocket.

That I don't know. I bought the car and said I had to have two keys. The dealership could only find one, so they bought me another. I was a little shocked that they sent the key direct to my house! I open this package and there's a live key in it. Put it in and it worked. whow.

The one on the left is actually lighter and cheaper feeling than the older one on the right. It also looks cheaper in hand.
