Oil for higher mileage rides

Friends got roughly 120 on his beast. He's wondering if he should still use the factory (? I believe 0w40) Mobil1 - or I just looked on their website & suggested switch it up to their High Mileage formula which is 5w30?
He claims he wants a thicker oil which is better for high mileage cars because it allows even coating/protection/etc.
My philosophy though has always been thinner oil to allow it to move it there freely, not becoming clogged, and lubing all the parts up.
Of course I know this all changes with cold/hot climates as well, so regardless of that whats the idea about thick/thin oils related to mileage only? Thx
