Yup open deck block. Better for cooling and much lighter.

Well I stand corrected, I thought he said he would like to get a before dyno but it was 120 miles away so an older dyno that is still technically a "before" dyno would be used. That is great that something recent was done to really see where the power may shift around in different parts of the rpm band.

We may be doing some good old fashion garage wrenching but we still have mega sources to get the job done.. Blew up two torque wrenches and a few other tools but with one text, SNAP ON truck shows up at my house to save the day. Damn, this is a fun project!

Hmm ... wow I didn't even look at the block! I wonder what the highest amount of boost the sleeves can take without cracking!
It would be possible to press in deck guards if you were getting serious, though with all that displacement, probably need to run north of 1000HP before that happens. Someone should try it and see

A ghetto way is pour salt in and liquid aluminum, to close off the deck and drill cooling vias for the coolant. The ghetto way works wonders ... though I am not sure about doing that here

Wow the tools oh man what tools ... so so jealous! The perfect man cave! LOL

It is really not that bad of a job but does require focus. I can do heads and cam on a modern Camaro in 4 hours but the 55 motor is much more entailed. Lot of parts to keep clean.

It comes down to tools, tools and tools. Shardul and I have some pretty good tools but it takes doing this job once to get all your tricks dialed in. We go the extra mile and do a lot of extra stuff an Indy shop wont do or even mention.

We did some parts cleaning today and just getting ready for the next round to begin. Also doing a lot of extra maintenece on S/C, S/C inlet, powder coating valve covers.
Here is a pic of the truck pulling up! sure diggin the SNAP ON truck.

What was your technique for cleaning the pistons. Did you vacuum out the walls after..?

Not a great way to remove the carbon but leaving it on could mean Detonation.

I used some brake cleaner on a rag and soaked the carbon for 15 minutes and then used a wood paint stir stick to remove carbon. It came off easy and the final small amounts, used finger nail.. Yes, used a vacuum cleaner and compresseed air. Lot of heavy duty blue rags. This took about 1.5 hours to do.

Again, carbon creates hot spots, so no need to do all this work and not clean the pistons.

I did the same thing with my LS motor. i would also use a razor blade and lightly.. very gently... scrape the carbon off in stubborn areas.

Thanks!

Shardul and I are about to get back on the project tonight. Only doing a couple hours though, but I am sure he will have pics coming.

This is one of the key tools my wife bought of the Snap on truck (I have to ask to use it too). Yes, I have 3 TQ wrenches but as most of us do, we torque wheels, leave the wrench on the TQ number and never send them ot get calibrated.

Below is a SNAP ON wrench and it comes with certified calibration papers and is a must to have on TQ-ing those darn stretch to yeild head bolts.

Just for fun, next time you have major work done on your Benz, ask the tech to see his TQ wrench calibration papers. That will tell you if he is meticulous enough to do a quality job.. hehe If his wrench isnt calibrated or he says what?? Drive away fast.

Drivers side head buttoned down, with fresh gun metal grey valve cover on top.

The stock dull, dirty VC cover was to ugly to put on these pretty new race heads. Nice surface to just wipe dirt off now.

Very clean! Great work and props to you guys for tackling this project. Looking forward to seeing the dyno results. I'm sure the goal would be to see a drop in boost pressure with the more efficient heads but with a nice gain in HP.

We got the passenger side head on yesterday evening. SC inlet was port matched to the 82mm TB and flanges on the sc were smoothen out. Will post some pics later on
