My $8443 dealership estimate

The name says it all....Sunroof and fuel smell (continued)

Some of you will recognize this from previous posts in the sending unit/cars are bombs thread. (who ever said it will need a new tank was right)

Thanks goes out to the Daves Coupe Sunroof Thread for instructions on fixing the pano roof problem.

So i get this estimate and said oh no, non-CPO/warranty E63 gonna cost me a lot this time, but thanks to MBWorld, I fixed the pano myself this weekend for $1.49 galvanized junction box cover and some JB Weld.

I know, there will be comments about out of warrranty, etc. but so far I am ahead. Money spent on vehicle:
Evo Rotors 2,000
pads F/R 358
fuel sending unit---covered by MB service but did not fix the problem
Tank 736 labor 400= 1136
sway bar bushing
upper ball joint combined $500
Recent diagnosis $110

So I have spent $1746 on stuff that may have been covered by a warranty. The rotors, pads, and sensor would not been. I read some member comments where their fuel sending unit was not covered so they cancelled their policy and got most of their money back.

Anyway there are members on here looking at CPO vs non CPO cars. I say look at the history and the stuff that has been addressed and also be prepared to spend some money even if you go CPO route.

Why would I pay money even if I go the CPO route? It's an extension of the factory warranty. Aside from service and wear items, I shouldn't have to come out of pocket for jack.

CPO will not cover everything. This is a common misconception. For example my car was determined to have a leaking fuel sender gasket. The gasket for some unknown reason was not covered under CPO. I resolved the problem another way but the issue serves to point out that CPO isn't all inclusive.

What were the symptoms of your Pano failure? Mine is not working as well. The front shade doesn't roll up when the bar slides back.

It sounded like grinding gears, coming from the rear view mirror area which is where the motor is located.

It sounds like the shade spool is problematic for you. I am not sure if the spool side is motor or spring driven.

Do you have a link for this repair?

My Pano roof just started making this noise. The dealer gave me an $8000 quote to repair the roof!

So how does 1 know what and what not a CPO will cover? Is there a list or is each dealer CPO car have different lists of items not covered?
Im looking at selling my NON- Waraanty E63 in for a newer model CPO E63 but want to
know the grey areas of a CPO car.

And btw, the Pano roof is a PITA to work with if your not taking it all down. I need to install a simple plastic clip and it was a nightmare to get it into the rear track groove.

You have to look at the what is covered section in the policy. Its just like any other insurance policy, they usually state what is covered and no what isn't. You should be able to ask about the CPO policy that comes with the car.

For example you have a warranty and the airmatic goes out and ends up being the strut. The rep I spoke to said the policy covers the airmatic components EXCEPT the strut itself. Another member here wrote that they had a policy, fuel sending unit went out and was not covered so they actually cancelled their policy. Same thing for Pano, a policy said sunroof but not Pano specifically so take your chances there too.

I read about a warranty company only covering a part of the repair and calling the rest of it some technicality like a wear item so the customer has to pay as well.

Just wondering, why are you changing cars?

I looked at my shade today and it seems that it is spring loaded rather than driven by the shade motor. Kinda like those white vinyl blinds that roll up. If the get "sprung" then they stop rolling up.

That may or may not be a replaceable part. The dealer wanted to replace my whole sunroof because they said the drive lines that engage the motor were stripped and since there is not a parts list for the pano components, the whole thing had to be replaced. I know now that it was really the motor cover being bent so in reality they could have just replaced the motor but it still may have happened again over time. Straightening the cover and making a plate for it is the way to go to fix it. Total replacement would be needed if the teeth on the cables are destroyed but in my case they were not.

You know what I think would be cool on these types of cars. Engine Tranny Rear Diff warranty. Everything else we cover but the biggies they cover and they provide a NICE refurb if the ultimate happens.

Guess then every teenager in the world would own a 03 E55 and beat the living snot out of it.

Oh well it was a good idea for a sec there.

I figure I can do a quick sale on my 07 E63 so I can pick this clean 08 S550 This guy cant afford anymore for a smoking deal. The 63 looks and interior is to out dated for me. If it had a update look like the c63 I might keep it. I never keep cars long.I plan to dump the 63 for a quick $35K to go ****** this S550.If not Ill wait til I can find a Jag XFR Cheap enough to try out.
