Ill try to give you my summation having owned both as well:

All my thoughts but again I did own them both.

E55: faster, more TQ, straight line rocket, more modern interior and amenities.

M5: Manual tranny, better suspension, better steering feel, stock exhaust note.

Ill say this, speed is one part of the driving experience and there is more to a choice than just speed in my book. These are both two cars I miss and I have had alot that I don't. The chassis response and high speed road feel of the M5 was better for me than in the W211. The car was just rock solid at higher speeds, albeit it takes longer to the get there.

The E39 M5 though is better compared to the W210 E55 and the W211's superior HP and TQ along with more recent interior appointments would make it the better choice.

I've probably seen like 20 E39 M5's in my lifetime and not one had a leather dash as per the Op's wet dream. I agree with Vic, a more appropriate comparo would be the W210 E55 and the E39 M5.

Approx...20,000 E39 M5's were produced in five years, which to me is a lot compared to the E55. There is defineitely a lot more E55's (8130) than the C32/C55s (less than 1,000/yr). However total E55 production was probably less than half that, whch makes the E55 a much more desirable car. M5 is mass produced while the E55 is not.

Besides whats going to drop more panty's in college? A W211 E55 or E39 M5.
The E55 will see some female action while the E39 M5 will just be the OP, his hand, some lotion and the leather dash he seeks the compainionship of.

Mine had a leather dash! It had the Extended Leather package which is pretty much leather everything. Still, this kid needs a S2000!

E55 will drop more panties FACT. I have a picture here.

This was 2004. My best friend and I were rolling through NYC in his '03 E55 (he's a former member here). Picked up these three little girlies from Massachussets and well, you can sorta see the beginning here.

E55 + Insane East-Side Apartment + Teenage girls = Fun.

LOL, the ONLY reason I could see for getting an E39 M5 over a W211 E55 AMG would be money. The E39 M5 is significantly cheaper than the AMG. I say, either step your game up, and test drive an E60 M5 vs the W211 E55 AMG. Or down grade for the E39 M5 vs W210 E55 AMG.

Dont even think of comparing a E60 M5 interior to our car.
E60 interiors should be relegated back to second division.

Hey AZGUNZ...

If you are still in the market for an 04 E55 send me a PM. I have a midnight blue one with 84k that has new Nitto 555's from Discount and a brand new alternator. It's had Mobil One, radiator flush and AC charged in the past 30 days too.
It's not perfect, Car Fax will prove that but it roles straight, stops straight and went 10-0 in September.

I'm gonna ask $16,000 as soon as the front window gets replaced next week.

I'm up near ASU and won't charge you a penny more because you're a Wildcat.

Oh....

...and this car did the Catalina Highway up to Summerhaven last Sunday. It turns fine. It even got 22.9mpg from I-10 & the 202, down to Marana w/ the cruise set on 70.

Because many people have owned both? Check the first couple of pages. Go back and read. In fact, I'll make it a little easier for you, read below. Peace, love and may you find happiness

Perfect response, thank you and to those with similar informative posts. I will have to test drive it and see how the handling is.
I do reach ~130 on my way to the gun range and back and I do love the solid feel of BMW, just hugs the ground. Haven't gone that fast in a Merc.
Done well over that in a formula Mazda

there were barely under 10k produced for the US market in the ~4 years 09/99-06/03. E55's were just under 8k in their 3-4 years.
my one moment of troll: wouldn't that mean the M5 was wanted more? Yes, I am joking.

and I don't need a car to get me laid lol, glad yours brings in some.

To be clear: IDGAF what the others think how it looks, how it drives, how fast it is, etc. It is my car, they're not driving it.
I enjoy driving, and no, that is not the sole purpose of my living, hence, no need for a Lotus. I want to be able to have fun around the twists and such, not track days.

An M5 with a leather dash? say it isn't so.. -not anything negative towards you-
It's pretty nice, just an added touch I think they should do on all M's and AMG's

I have never seen the interior of an S2000 but Im pretty sure its not anywhere near the level BMW or Merc lol

This will happen with any subject with "M5" and "E55" inside won't it.

Wondering what car would be faster to take AIDS vaccines to dying kids in Africa? The M5 or the E55

After a few posts.

"Well maybe those pu$sies wouldn't be dying so much if the E55 would be better in the twisties yo? M5 could hit um up with the junk straight quick"

"Too bad Africa is proven to have much more straights especially in the Kalahari region in which the E55 would have the M5 tossing it's salad"

Are you joking? Where did I ever say this was for other people's satisfaction and not my own?
Im asking the question for myself, you guys twisted my question to make it appear like I'm trying to impress the world. Again, why would an E39 M5 be a consideration if that was the case...

I could raise the price if you like...

You could paint it any color you like, mod the engine and put on any size hoops ya want and be under $25k.

The more I'm around this car business thing, the less it makes sense.

That's Arizona. The plate ring is from MB of Chandler. Phoenix suburb.

Anybody want an E55 for $16,000? GUNZ thinks it's too cheap.

it's a joke on the ASU UofA
an 04 with 80k at $16k seems like it has potential problems, if not ones existing already.. why so inexpensive?
