the short answer is that wrap will force the metal and welds to retain more heat than they can withstand and cause them to fatigue and fail. it's not worth the unmeasurable gains of keeping exhaust gasses hot to maintain their velocity, especially that close to the combustion chamber. if you need to protect other parts from heat, wrap those parts instead. better stainless steels may not show the effects as quickly but joints/welds are still vulnerable.
i know people will argue the benefits of wrap but i've ruined enough exhaust components and took the time to research why it happened so i'd hate to see people make mistakes i did.
