Returned from dealership service issue
Hey guys. Just got back from the MB dealership.
I wanted them to inspect my newly acquired 04 e55 since my warranty is about to expire.
Anyway this is what they came up with.
rear crank seal leaking price $977.25
valve cover gaskets and plugs $667.30
wiper blades $70.00![smash](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smashfreak.gif)
What do you guys think? the rear crank seal is new to me, i didnt notice any fluid leaks. would that be a DIY job?
Another thing, i asked if i could get the past service records from the car they said no that its due to the HIPA privacy act?
does anyone know of a dealer that would give me this info? i wouldnt mind paying if i had too.
Thanks for the help.

Do the covers and plugs yourself, its easy and there is info here that provides the know how. Not sure about the rest.

This does not aply to cars.

I don't think we have ever had a rear main seal go on a M-113.
EDIT my bad, I just searched it and many rear main seals have gone out (too many IMHO)
Valve cover gaskets last about 35K miles.
Plugs alone 16X$6.00
Wipers $14
The dealer is for warranty work only.

On my second rear main seal and cover. Keep in mind the seal in placed on a fragile thin aluminum cover which is also prone to leaking. MB calls for replacing this cover vs just removing and cleaning. Only $35 or so. It is the labor that gets you.

You can get a pair of goodyear wiper blades at Costco for $14. You can catch them when on the buy one get one free sale for $7. I am sure you can find elsewhere for about the same if you are not a member. Most of the other stuff should be covered under warranty.

I figured the prices where a little bit crazy.
I really don't know why they are so secretive about the past service history, they mentioned i would have to get permission from the previous owner![Confused](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
Does anyone work or know of a dealer that would supply me with the info?
Also is there a DIY on the rear seal replacement. My father has a lift in his garage and a large collection of tools so getting under there shouldn't be too hard.

I actually think for a Mercedes dealer the rear main price isn't too bad. As stated the Trans has to be yanked out or at least slid back enough to get at the back of the motor.
If your dad has a lift and a lot of tools he probably has the know how to do this or a friend that could guide you. A Trans Jack would be phenomenal but two three strong buddies will get this done too. Anyone know what these transmissions actually weigh? I imagine its not much harder than on other cars. If your asking how to do it your way in over your head though. Find someone you trust to help and they should have the attitude that its a pain to do, but not really be scared of the task.

The report you're looking for is called a VMI (vehicle maintenance inquiry)... That's the insider term so if you ask for it by name they might be more helpful about it. I had no problem getting a VMI from an MB dealer when I was shopping for my car.
It does contain previous owner info, so I understand that there is some sensitivity to releasing it but there of plenty of shops who will do it anyway.

Tranny jack, new flexplate to crank bolts, RMS seal, sealant, all come to mind. As the trans is out, front pump seal and heck, since your there, the crank position sensor is a breeze with the trans pulled back. Straightforward process.

I've yet to encounter a MB dealer who won't provide VMI info during the shopping process. Tell them you have no issue if they redact or blot out the prior owner info. You're interested in the car's service history, not whoever the PO was.

Ill have to try another dealer for the info. I don't think they are going to give up the info.
Does anyone on here work at a dealer that could supply me with the info?

Well if they dont provide the VMI, then dont use them for future work. Not saying they are preventing you from service that may already been done, but you have no idea whats been done prior history.

HIPAA? OK, that just made me laugh and laugh. Unless your car had surgery or gave birth, I think they're OK ![Smilie](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Redacting the previous owner's name is convenient, but it is pretty public information available from the DMV, so even that isn't important.
New dealer time.
