Voltage Regulator or BCM ????

Hello all,

So i have recently been having troubles with my nav and audio. It was getting to a point where i couldnt use my steering wheel buttons to control audio so i would take off the negative on the battery and do a reset and after a little while everything would come back. Then it started to do it more often and i kept getting the "batter protection conv functions" error. went to advace auto and they said the aux batt was toast so i bought a new one and everything started to work okay. then i kept getting issues so replaced the rear battery. In the past 2/3 weeks if i want my audio to work i have to reset the batt in the morning. today i wake up and the car is dead so i had a spare battery and it worked just fine. When i star lowerd my car and i did a quick test when it checked the AGW it had a "!". not sure what to think here guys. any help or suggestions is appreciated

Thanks

I looked at the voltage and the car is at 13.9/14 volts at idle. so im guessing we can rule out the voltage regulator right?

Im in the same boat.

My voltage gets as low as 12.1 at idle, but gets to 14.1 when im driving.

Having 14 at idle means you have enough juice to power your electronics. I cant offer any help, but I'd like to hear how you fix this.

I had the same issues. I changed the voltage regulator and still ended up with the dead battery etc.
I ended up changing the alternator - that fixed it all. FYI Autozone has a great price on a new Bosch alternator.
A long time ago I had the issue with the AUX battery and I changed it myself only to continue to get messages etc.
Took it to the dealership and they told me after the AUX battery is replaced there is some kind of computer reset that needs to be performed.
no messages after they did that.
Hope this helps

Not audio problems, but the red battery warning comes on, convenience functions turn off, etc.

At a certain rpm, typically 1400 rpm in fourth, the voltage fluctuates quickly from 14.2, to 13.1 and every number inbetween.

That can blow the diodes out of the alternator.

Better advise,

Do you have STAR? i was under the impression it needs to be reprogrammed for the BCM.

I warrantied my battery, put in the new one - same problems. Its either BCM or alternator (which is only 1.5 years old)

I don't have star and don't think it needs to be programmed. I get the bcm on Wednesday and will be putting it in that night. I'm thinking it has to be the bcm cause I drive my car to my parents house while the audio/nav functions were working and I was getting the battery protection conv functions not available. car has sat for 3 days and the batt is completely dead.

in your case it might not be the bcm cause you said that you got the red error on the cluster and it's not holding 13.9v.

The alternator on these cars dying is a pretty common issue. It's worth a shot to replace the voltage regulator or BCM but usually its the alternator itself. I hesitated replacing my alternator and eventually it ended up killing my battery too. Hopefully the BCM fixes your issue.

I had pretty similar issues. I'd get the conv. function unavailable message, plus all my lights in the car would pulse. When I checked the voltages they were fine, around 14 I think.

I replaced the alternator and battery and its been fine ever since.

well I went to start my car yesterday and the battery was completely dead again, I left it connected to the other car I was using to give it some charge to jump it and it finally limped over and the car started, let it idle for like 15 min and drove the car and was having all issues from before. deff not my alternator. today I lost all power I mean worse than when sc pump is not working. car would not get out of the gear it was in and I couldn't use the the actual gear selector on the shifter but only on the steering wheel and then it eventually got stuck in 2nd. turned it off an on and car worked fine then it it did power loss thing again and threw a check engine light, WTF

At this point, take to indy with Star and see what the diagnosis is. I got this when i had my car in for service.

aux battery failed midtronics test....325.00

2x since owning it the past year, convenience functions not available error came up. After driving for 4 min, the error disappears.

Charged the aux battery fully using CTECK charge and no more errors.

THE RESULTS ARE IN!

The BCM came back to be fine, but it was throwing a aux batt relay error, cleared it and half way down the road conv functions temp unavailable again. Whats probably causing my batt to die is the AGW, its done.

Maybe Im slow, whats the AGW.

Mine is going in tomorrow for diagnosis. Im betting on my alternator being the issue.
