The more I think about this it seems the negative camber just builds tons of heat on the inner sidewall that eventually kills the sidewall from the rubber deteriorating. I'm gonna toss my infrared temp gun in the car and take some readings from each sidewall after a bit of a drive and compare the two sides. Lots of heat building up from the camber causing excessive flex in the sidewall could be what's causing these problems. That and I still think Hankooks are cheap.
Getting a tire rated for extra load capacity may be a smart move on these cars as the side walls will be build stronger.

I would recommend putting the factory rims back on (improve ride quality at the very least) and using either a Michelin, Bridgestone, Yok., or Goodyear tire. My guess is your wife's car has been lowered and is running too much negative camber - which will destroy the inside of the tire both from wear and heat.
