You should be able to program the key yourself by putting it in the ignition and rotating the key to the 1st position and let it sit for a couple of hours. Put the rear battery on a charger if you're worried about killing power.
The dash will say something like "Learning Key"... eventually the pairing will be complete and you can use the key as normal. I don't know if you have keyless go, but it works fine for that too.
I bought a new key from the dealer and did this procedure in my own garage and it works perfectly....

I remember asking MB how I could be sure that the "lost" key could never be used to drive my car in the future. There may have been something the dealer did with STAR to clear the previous keys and only allow the two current ones to work. Honestly, I've forgotten the details about how that all worked. They basically sent me home with the key and told me I could do the pairing myself so I didn't have to wait around for a couple of hours while my car tried to learn it.
My point to the OP was only that if the key was previously paired with the car, the ignition trick might be all that's necessary. It seems unlikely that STAR settings as important as key pairings would be lost simply be disconnecting the battery?!
