Why do I get shocked every time I get out my car?
I end up tapping the top of my door before I close it to get the shock over with. Is it a short or just static electricity?

A few possibilities.
1. It's your car not wanting you to leave.
2. Spandex went out of style years ago for this exact reason
3. Your seat is too high and your hair is rubbing on the headliner

I had a bronco that used to do it to me all the time. I thought it had something to do with all the crazy stereo junk I had built into it.

It's caused by the clothes you wear and the dry air. Electrons are exchanged between your clothes and the car seat, building up collections of excess charges. The car tires and the soles of your shoes are insulators, stopping the charges from escaping to the ground. As you reach to close the metal door, electrons leap between your finger and the car… zap!

My first car, a 1992 Mazda MX-3 (V6) actually had a rubberized plate the size of quarter that had "Touch" written on it. It was placed high on the door jam and you were supposed to touch it every time you got out of the car to eliminate static shock. Gotta love 90's ingenuity.
