Cracked wheel... Already searched... Opins plz...

Hello.

Was leaking air... About 3-4 lbs a day for past two days. Thought it was a nail, but after checking found a hairline crack on the inside lip of one wheel.

Did a search and found most everyone saying buy a new wheel in the various cracked a wheel threads.

But seriously from experience speaking... has anyone had a bad experience from a repair of a cracked wheel or know of anyone that has had a bad experience?

I have spoken to some ppls i know in the auto mod biz as well as the stealer, and have heard nothing but raves and that it should be no problem.

Thx for the read and input.

I always take my wheels to LAX Wheel Refinishing. They are located in East LA. Not the nicest neighborhood but they manufacture wheels for Chrysler and GM. They are inexpensive and fast. Should cost $45-65. Only thing is you have to dismount the tire before the repair. Ask for Ivan. (323) 269-1484

They can do.downright amazing repairs for pretty cheap on wheels. As was said you'd never know. Much cheaper then a new wheel. Well worth it in my opinion. Know a few people that have had succesful repairs performed for cracks.

I've repaired two stock AMG wheels with pretty decent results. One actually had two cracks. They ran true and didn't leak after the repairs. At 140mph, I just couldn't get the thought of those cracks out of my head though, so I eventually ended up just getting a new set of wheels from a vendor on here.

Ditto. I had to repair two front stock AMG wheels due to hairline cracks/leaks. When one of the repaired ones cracked again (probably 15K miles later), I realized that it was to be a chronic problem. Given the price of one OEM rim, I got a set of four aftermarket rims.

I lived in So. Cal when I had them repaired. There are many people that do this in the area (and well). I had mine done for $100. Ask around and inspect their work. Be wary of someone who says they can repair any crack -- some are irreparable. Also, be wary if the repair weld is sizable. Given the pressure on these wheels, any repair will always be the point most likely to fail again.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Got the work done with LAX Wheel Refinishing and it was done super quick and looks clean.

I had a slight bend in the outer lip of the same wheel and had them correct that as well.

But now I have to find someone to refinish the outer lip of the wheel.

Maybe a stupid question, but can refinishing work on the lip of the wheels be done while still on the car w/ tires?

If you want a good looking job then no. I do not think that some of the reputable wheel repair centers will ever attempt to refinish while still on the car and with mounted tire. Never hurt to ask. Call around.
