Latest on colors and Designo
I have a 2002 E55 with the Designo Espresso edition upgrade. In that version, the leather is a beautiful, rich coffee color and much softer than the standard E55 leather. For 2004, the leather on the E55 Designo Espresso is called "Sand", and it is washed out in comparison to the prior version; the paint, called "Mocha Black", remains the same fortunately. I was told that the coffee-colored leather will now be available only on the Designo Espresso editions for the CL and S classes.
The new choice for the E55 in 2004, the Designo Graphite edition, incorporates a most unusual gray paint -- with an incredible density of multicolored "sparkles" suspended in it. The accompanying "Graphite" leather is similar in color to the standard E55 charcoal nubuck, but of finer grain.
I also got swatches of the merlot and the bluc nubuck leathers for the 2004 E55. They are greatly toned down in intensity from prior years. The blue is clearly a blue-gray and provides only a subtle contrast to the standard charcoal. The merlot is a dull burgundy color and offers a bit more contrast to the standard charcoal nubuck, but again one that is rather subtle.
Prices for Designo are not yet determined, and I was told they will be set only a very few days before the 2004 model begins shipping.
