Newly acquired E55...and trying to get to the bottom of something (Exhaust questions)
Yes, I've used the search engine. Unfortunately, since this is a generally subjective subject, all I see is opinions and arguing over what's better. So I'll make this simple.
Recently bought an '06 E55 AMG. Beautiful, powerful car as I'm sure you all know. I want to get a better sound on my car WITHOUT losing power or torque...or at least as little as possible.
I'm leaning towards doing a secondary cat and resonator delete since most of the clips I've seen leave a desirable note. Now I've heard a lot of people recommending an X-pipe. Here are my questions.
1. Without an X-pipe, will a secondary cat and res delete cause a power loss? Better yet, is there *actual* proof on a dyno or something showing power differences?
2. If I really do need an X-pipe, what do you guys recommend?
Looking forward to hearing your opinions and facts.

How much volume increase do you want? Deleting the secondary cats and resonator will give you zero performance gain, and a slight increase in sound but not much. The stock mufflers are amazing at keeping the volume down even with the modified mid section.
If you want a nice muscular sound with zero rasp, I highly recommend leaving your mid section alone, and JUST doing a muffler delete going back into the stock tips. You will loose about 40lbs of weight, and it will sound perfect imo. There are a couple guys on here that did that and it turned out good.
This is an resonator and muffler delete, if you keep the resonator, it will be ALOT quieter:

However, deleting the resonator and secondary cat will give you a nice tone.. I just had this done, and am very happy with the results.. I dont have a video of my set up yet, but this thread has a video of a secondary cat and resonator delete.. If your not looking for anything too crazy, then I think this is the best set up.

Koru, congrats on the new acquisition. Did you sell the SLK? Still have Lenneth? Where are you parking all these cars?
Good luck with the new beast.

Seriously though. Sold the SLK. Made 3 grand off of it after driving it a year, so it was a no-brainer sale. Lenneth has been recently sold to a good friend of mine. I actually need to say goodbye to the C32 forums, but I'll still be there to help support my friend since he bought my car. I'm looking for another SLK 230, but one that's '01 or newer with a sport package. Got the E55 from Carmax. Warranty for 6 years/125K miles. Time to break things...

Oh, I didn't tell you? Jay Leno's a sponsor of mine. I just use his garage.

That is not mine bro, it is AWOL'S. Mine is a little louder, it consists of longtubes, off-road x pipe, stock resonator and magnaflow magnapacks.

Does anyone have a sound clip of just the muffler delete alone? That'd be helpful.

I was under the impression that secondary cat + resonator delete would cause too much cabin drone...
It'd be nice if someone had a video of an in cabin sound note without their window rolled down. Anyone have that? :P

In front of the resonator is some clamps. You are going to want to keep those clamps. making the whole system a 1 huge piece can make any future work to your car, that involves R&Ring of the exhaust system very labor intensive. We all know labor rates are not getting cheaper these days. My advise is really always this. Do 1 thing at a time. See how you like it. I would personally would do the res delete first. However there is no power to be had from a res delete, but some sound can go a long way to helping you enjoy your AMG a bit more.
So again if you choose to do an Xpipe mod. Keep it as close to the front of your car as possible (secondary cat location) and keep your clamps. Or even have a new clamping system installed.
