ODB2 cable + software?

My buddy has a cable ($8) that plugs into his ODB2 port on his 2001 Audi A4 and he uses a program called VAG-COM (free I think) to change all kinds of settings on his car.

What type of cable or programs are there for Mercedes so I can do this also?

Star DAS. More like $400 for the Chinese copy.

VAGCOM isn't free ( it's about $400 if I remember correctly) and it's a diagnostics software. However, you can get lemmiwinks o Unisettings which IS free and can change setting on the car that not even Vagcom can.

While Star Diagnosis is the diagnostics system of choice for Mercedes, there is nothing like Lemmiwinks or Unisettings for us.

So i bought a VAG COM cable before for my BMW. Is there a similar setup that could utilize this other software you are referring to? Would VAG COM cable with with the e55 as well?
