Exhaust Cutouts - Help Me Decide
I think I found my next, "Fun" mod, exahust cutouts that can be open or closed with a switch.

Has anyone does these on their E55's and if so do you like them? Apparently there is an HP gain and the sound must be thunderous!
Appreciate the advice as always.

Looks to be around $300 for the parts and I'm guessing 1-2 hours labor/installation time? So $500 all in, this is just a guess however.
A few folks have done this so I'd love to hear from them. There is an HP gain here, probablly 20-30 HP with the valves open.

Here are some videos directly from the manufacturer and they look pretty cool! I'd mount the switch in the hidden compartment that's at the base/front of ou driver's side seats. Reach down, pop it open, hit the switch and 100 db at full launch.
I could see me doign this at a stop light when somebody pulls up to race me and the look on their face particularlly if I rev it a few times before launch with these wide open would be priceless!
And if the Po-Po roll up, hit the switch again and you're quiet as a mouse.

Plus there IS an HP gain here, (guessing around 30 HP) it's just not for sound.

chawkins has cut outs with the switch in that exact spot. They do sound amazing too. You two have the same headers also. You might want to check with him on this.

I have tried them. Not very reliable. The come apart easily even with thread locker. Ended up welding the thing together then motor failed. This was a while ago so maybe design has improved. I would look for longer term usage reports. Mine would fall apart after a few weeks until I welded it.

The one question I have about the cutouts is location what do you guys think would be the best location to install the cutouts as far as power gains has anyone attempted to put the cutouts before the primary cats I know the chance of it throwing a CEL is pretty high my next thought would be to put them after the primary cats is anyone seeing a loss in back pressure from putting them there my next location would be after my x-pipe I feel that would be the ideal location I am open to any input

i have a set of qtp, lifted the car to put it on but theres no room under the car to put it besides the back right before the mufflers, didnt put it on because it was too noticeable. i had one on the evo 8 30hp gain at top end, fun but loud

I'll check out the other vendor as well, appreciate passing that alone.
I don't want to do all this and then have them fail, especially since I'll be drilling into my gorgeous Floor Fabbed Long Tube Headers.
I'll keep digging around as well, heck maybe I can organize a group buy for us, like I did with the TTM E55 scoops!
Thanks!

Yes, I have QTP electric cutouts directly bolted to my FF Headers, made 10rwhp/12rwtq with them open on the Dyno.
I will insert some pics and links for the stuff here.

Peeps,
Found a really good thread here about these, net-net don't get them. A few folks have lost motors because of them (The engine temp goes way up apparently) and with our cars already battling heatsoak and cylinder number 8's fuel issue, it's not worth the risk. Basically the motor start leaning out as much more air is flowing out more quickly when these are open and given modded E55's risk with anyway...you could lose the entire motor.
Read this thread, really informative.
http://www.chargerforums.com/forums/...d.php?t=137120
So I won't do these now...have to be safe with the E55 motor.
A couple key points from the above thread:
Pros:
-Sounds Badazz!
-Set's off car alarms
-I have noticed a difference in performance when closed vs. open
-Can go from a moderate sounding exhaust to a beast all at the press of a button
-4 Yr Warranty
-Friendly staff at DMH
Cons:
-Staff doesn't always stick to their assurances, ex. you should have these in 2 days when really 2 weeks
-I've replaced the sets about 4 times already, currently awaiting 5th set
-Motor's have blown out making the cut outs flap and rattle
-I've noticed that when running these for a long time they make the engine temperature rise. I have mine installed after the cats, and almost instantly after you close them the temperature goes back to normal
They sound best when in auto-stick mode
Overall, I'd say if I had the option to do it all over again I probably wouldn't. Too much work and poor build quality. 5 sets in 2 years is unheard of, good thing that I know how to replace them myself, I can only imagine what the cost of this would have been had I taken it somewhere and had them replaced each time. Again when they work properly I LOVE THEM. But too much work in my opinion.
Another...
With the cut-outs open you have effectively shortened the overall length of the exhaust system, which affects the cylinder scavenging that is provided by the exhaust. In short this means the exhaust cannot effectively remove all the hot spent gases before the valve closes, leading to higher combustion chamber temps.
If you do a little searching about cut-outs, you'll find that this is primary reason why people say that, while they improve top end HP, you lose some low end TQ running them open. The more fresh fuel and air you can pack into a cylinder, the more power you will make.
And the last
I rarely open them everyday, I'll usually have them open for short bursts and close them. I did blow an engine last year and I really cant prove it but I'm pretty sure it was the result of the cutouts. I drove from Philly to Delaware with them open most of the way and I was racing an older M3 about half the time. I stopped at a gas station to get fuel w/them open filled up and went to start the engine and BOOOOM! Heads dropped down into the cylinders because the car overheated. That short sitting while at the gas station re-fueling made it worse I suppose.

Good info.. Chawkins2001 do you think the numbers you made were worth the cost. I have heard when putting them directly after the primary cats you leave each cylinder head fighting each other instead of working together also brings up the loss of back pressure.

This is just an educated guess on my end, but as I've yet to have a single mod of mine fail in 3 years, I don't want to start now particually given the risk.

I'm not as technical as many of you here, but I think the gist is when these are open it throws off the A/F ratio, drops backpreasure and the motor can't cope/adjust around this sudden and significant change, particularly if they're open for a long period of time. Plus these aren't reliable at all which adds more issues.
