No rubbing up front?

After all those PMs I sent you, i chickened out and went with a staggered setup.

Are you lowered or using spacers and lastly what is clearance like? Could you have gone bigger? If not, why? It obviously looks like it might rub the outer fender. What is the inside clearance like? If you had a slightly different offset could you center the wheel in your clearance spots better?

For the rear sake, im trying to determine what the absolute widest square set of wheel/tire package could fit. With all the torque we make traction is already limited. Maybe with a less offset wheel theres more room to get a big square set using a small spacer in the rear. Just spit balling here.

Thanks for your time with all these questions and im looking forward to full review of your current setup. It looks great.

I'm in the same boat as the people above me. So the 255s didn't rub at all? How was the strut side clearance with a 9.5? Thanks in advance for the help!

All good...you can always get another pair of rear wheels and tires if you ever decide to switch it up.

I'm definitely lowered (using lowering links) at about 12.5" on Sport II (measured from top of fender arch to center of wheel hub). No spacers, the wheels are 18x9.5 et28 and I think 275 section width up front is ideal, to match the rear. 285s are possible, but I would prefer to run at least a 10" wide wheel.

Clearance is good up front, even better with the 275/35 compared to the 255/40, I ran previously. The inner fender lip is flattened and only get slight rubbing at full steering lock going into a driveway. A higher offset such as et32 on 9.5" wide can resolve clearance issues if it's a significant concern.

When trying to match the rear (limited traction as you said), I decided 275 was the minimum width to go. If I went custom wheels (dreaming of CCW Classics), then 18x10 et25 is what I was thinking to start with, which is ironically the same size/fitment I'm running on my smaller, compact E46 BMW.

My overall intent is to reduce the understeer on turn-in and although the W211 is not a track car, I think there is (some) room to improve handling even with the performance compromise of the Airmatic. I'm sure a coilover conversion is a night-and-day improvement, however...lol.

Hi Mike - The 255s rubbed a little because it was such tall tire at 255/40-18. The 275/35-18 fit MUCH better. Plenty of clearance on the strut side, about 15mm of clearance with the 9.5 et28 wheels.

Ok awesome. I am picking up an e55 AMG wagon and I am assuming fender spacing is relatively similar. In your estimation would these represent a pretty flush fitment (considering the wagon and sedan are the same if you can confirm that)...

F: 19x9.5 et32 255/35-19 (I will be rolling the fenders but maybe I need a couple mm higher offset)
R: 19x10 et35 285/30/19

Thanks for the help! Not too many stanced (yet beefy tires) wagons with specific offsets out there.

Mike

The fitment will be similar; your setup being slightly less aggressive in front (4mm).

Just a quick calculation of your proposed setup compared to my current 9.5" et28 shows:

F: 19x9.5 et32 (compared to 18x9.5 et28)
  • outside of wheel: 4mm more clearance
  • inside of wheel: 4mm less clearance (you have room here)
  • tires: 255/35 will be fine, but I would roll the front fenders because the corner of the tire CAN grab the inner fender lip when going up a driveway with the wheel articulated at some steering angle--ask me how I know (i.e., it happened to me).
Furthermore, when you flatten the inner fender lip you WILL crack the paint at the crease of the fold, which I realized in hindsight, I should have grinded the paint off at that crease before flattening the lip, to prevent any torsional stress on the paint. A heat gun heating the paint will not be enough to make the paint pliable, IMO.

R: 19x10 et35 (compared to 18x9.5 et28)
  • outside of wheel: 1mm more clearance
  • inside of wheel: 13mm less clearance (you have room here)
  • tires: 285 may have a slight rub (on fender) such that you may not even consider fender rolling because it's minor and only happen if you're really low, BUT my observation is based on my sedan rear fender (stock fenders; not rolled).

Ok cool. I was using e90posts fitment guide. I have played with my 335i fitment so much I know the perfect setup for that car but have NO idea for the benzies. So what I am hearing is the front setup should be ok just make sure not to rip off the inner front bumper lip. And then the rear would you add a little bit more offset? I am sure the rear could fit an 11 if you wanted to but that is too much of a difference for me... Maybe I can offer a revised theory and you can comment...

19x9.5 et34 (255/35-19)
19x10 et38 (285/30-19)

With fender roll (I will be getting the e63 front end so my buddies shop can cut or alter the fenders to make the wheels work or whatever). Let me know what you think master fitment guru!!! Thanks!

very cool car. those exhaust tips are sick!!! Very few Pewter cars around and especially in the E55, people don't realize how incredible the color looks in person.

The LED stuff in your taillights is very cool. Are you going to add some to the front?

The car is lowered to an extreme but probably looks better in person.

There is a thread on here about the coilover conversion if you have a taste for that one...

Nice thread!

I removed the factory turn signal bulbs, which left a hole and after some minor trimming, was able to snugly fit a standard 7506 bulb base. I used the factory (-) to the bulb base and then used a female spade terminal to connect the (+) contact and solder the other end to the (+) contact of the LED bulb with a short wire.

I my previous experience, these particular LED bulbs (Solarzen) has the most load resistance with its internal resistors to eliminate "Bulb Out" errors. But for some reason, one LED bulb was giving me intermittent errors (likely a QC issue, bad bulb) so I installed an external load resistor for just that bulb. No bulb errors.

Thanks bro!

It did take a while for me to get used to the connected exhaust tips, but they've finally grown on me now!

Actually, I am, currently running LED bulbs for the front turn signals as well.

More updates.

Installed a NeedsWing catchcan.

TB shaft grind, FTW.

I went a bit conservative so I can probably grind more off, but not likely a measurable benefit to go through the trouble again, lol.

Road trip status, lol.
