I also agree with members on here. Keep the E55 and pick up the 996TT, that's what I'm going to do soon. It's the best of both worlds.

996tt is chalk and cheese to the 55k, I like a lot about both vehicles. As a daily driver Amg is better and a little more practical obviously. Performance wise, P cars are in another league, maintenance and how cheap it is to make it stupid fast is just so easy.

TBH I think if you could stretch to a 997TT (metzger version tho) it would be worth it. The ride is better and Tip version is also easily moddable and it has the better lights.
I would only get a 996TT if I was going to go to town on mods.... and of course if you can afford both, just do it.
E55 vs 997TT is a verry tough call indeed.

I wouldn't imagine the 911 having a significantly less maintenance cost... they're both high end cars and parts are generally expensive for these types of cars (brake pads, rotors, tires, fluid changes, etc.)

My first car was a GTR so I have much love for them. Just unfortunately end of the day still is a Nissan, I found when you get a bit older you have different priorities over performance, style, class etc.
I am sure you will understand one day.

^^ I don't know why people take things so personally when it comes to the types of cars they drive... same reason why I wouldn't make a post on an AMG forum about purchasing a Porsche (not saying post on a Porsche forum either... it's going to be bias either way).
If people would give the man the response he wants... not bias, straightforward pros/cons; he'd be a happy man. I'm not even so sure how the GT-R came into this conversation as the question was moving from an E55 to a 996. I'm sure the OP has budget in his mind when going from an E55 to a 996 which is why he's not considering a 997 or a GT-R (similarly priced). If it was all about what the BEST car is, why isn't anyone mentioning a Bugatti?

I think my next fun car will be either a 911 Tt or gtr on a year or so. I wouldn't mind a shark werked 911 or alpha or Switzer gtr.

Not to prolong the fight but in terms of outright performance little to choose between the GTR and Porsche...
Take fit, finish, maintenance & interior into account and the Porsche is better by miles ... enough for the price gap? ... apparently so for many.
Brand *****? Everyone one is... we all have our favorites .. if we didnt Apple would not be able to charge double for a phone that is at end of day no better than a Gallaxy III (and to be clear I have the iP5 - and its battery sux btw).
I still lust after a 997.2TT... on other hand I'd like to drive a GTR for a day ... and then give it back.
Back on topic... if you can, do it, just buy the TT (used 997 I think worth the price gap now)... you cant go too wrong, if its not for you there will be buyers around.

Having your favorite brand, and suggesting one buys a car because of the brand are different things. Obviously porsche has more cachet than nissan. But if I'm buying a performance car, so long as it meets my needs in terms of quality, materials, design etc, i don't care if its built by hyundai or lamborghini.

I love Porsche coz of how they dominated Le Mans and racing in general - and always been involved in the motor sport side of things - sadly a bit less so of late. Also they were a big part of my childhood where my uncle was lucky enough to have owned at any one time or another almost every derivative since the 930 came out - and I got chance to get a drive in his cars - amazing times. Its got history for me. I dont think you can ignore this impact on people.
Is the GTR as good as a 911 in terms of pace ... sure ... but it hasnt got the story behind it for me.

996TT for the win. They are sexy as hell, powerful, easy to make faster.. handle amazing and very reliable!
Also supposedly according to my buddy that once owned a pretty fast e55 and now owns a 900whp 996..
The 996 is actually cheaper to mod and cheaper to fix (but it rarely breaks anyway!)
