LOL if you think the M5 is going to be more reliable than the E55... sure it may not have battery related issues like you're experiencing, but it's not a Toyota Corolla / Honda Civic with reliability either.

From the bcm to the auxilliary battery...when it gets warm i know i can solve this issue now that i have replaced every part along the battery system except for the altenator..
Has anyone every herd of the altenator giving false readings

I recently had a similar issue whith my charging system, ended up being the alternator, it started with the convenience functions message here n there, then progressively more frequent until the voltage began showing 10-11v, however when at idle, system charged just fine, when rpms were raised voltage would drop off and no charging occurred, then intermittently would and wouldn't,, ended up buying a NEW Bosch OEM alternator on Amazon for $260, new and shipping, lifetime warranty...took a chance and swapped out the alternator, during inspection of the old alternator, the entire rear electrical/regulator area was fried/toast, indicating clear evidence of a failed part, hense the occasional funny smell from under the hood here n there sometimes, long story short, threw in the new alternator, charged up both batteries on a slow charge hoping they would recover, and they did, so far, so good, system charging at 13.9-14.2v all accessories running...no more convenience message.

Im going to by a ctek smart charger to charge up both my batteries real good.. And from there move on to a new altenator

I to have been having the same problem this last week. I was out of the country and did not start my car for 15 days, upon my return battery was dead. Charged battery and the same light came on. Replaced the battery with a new one still the same. I know its the alternator so going to replace this next.

The convenience warnings came and went every now n then, weeks or months between, usually when I ran the radio with the engine off or accessories for a short period of time,,, after a few minutes the charging system seemed fine....however, now looking back, it may have been that the batteries were not charging so well since the Alt was probably not at it's optimum,,,anyways,, I think it got worse when I didn't drive her for a couple weeks, that may have been the straw that broke the camels back as they say,,,best way I went about it was to charge the batteries, see if they held charge on their own, then I ran a charging system test where I determined the Alt. was intermittently charging on n off depending on the rpm...on idle at times, it would be right where it needed to be then out of nowhere the voltage dropped, at 2000 rpm, no charge,, at idle, began charging, it was kinda tricky,, but after seeing the condition of the rear part of the old Alt it was clear that it was what I had been intermittently smelling burning under the hood,,, I don't want to speculate but it seems as if most of us having these charging issues happened to randomly begin after the car sits for some time, I too had my car in the garage for about to weeks without driving during the holidays and the very day I did take it out was the day my Alt. Completely went.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just had my first encounter with this problem also. I'll verify to see if I have original or new batteries since this car is new to me and 7 years old. If they're old, i'll just replace them pre-emptively. However i'd like to make sure I don't trash perfectly good new batteries because of a bad alternator or something else.
Any good tips on verifying if my alternator is still trustworthy? Also, anyone know where I can find what type of draw I SHOULD be seeing on each circuit? I'm assuming this would be a relatively easy test with a multi-meter on the individual fusebox circuits if I knew what numbers to look for.
Finally.... i did notice the car stumbling / idling rough a few weeks ago when it was crazy cold here in AZ (27 degrees) in the morning. I wonder if that would be related or if that's a whole new issue.

Interesting you ask that. I have only just started getting the random low voltage warning and it has been roughly a month since I put in my lowering module. I did replace my original aux battery and main battery and I will be checking the voltage regulator next. I'll try to see if i can pull any related codes tonight.

What are some of the batteries you guys have used? I think my problem is, I have my lowering module, aftermarket amp, ipod connection and probably more all juice my battery little by little. Just go to Autozone and pick up a battery?

you need to get a battery or batteries with more amps...
i think the alternator makes 100 amps, so figure how hard its working with the electronics you have

I disconnected the amp for a while actually since my sub or amp stopped working and ipod connection is OEM. Hmmm let me change the AUX battery first and let's see. What are the battery size type?

I don't understand how a reputable dealer/Indy shop can't diagnose the problem..?
Posting a thread is like shooting in the dark without us knowing the history etc. I would've found a good dealership/shop and paid a premium from the get-go if I couldn't diagnose the problem myself with the common culprits for this issue (e.g. Aux battery/relay).
PS I've owned the newer generation M5s and trust me, those are just as bad if not worse on your wallet.

Can some one tell me what this part is. Its located under the passenger floor board... It seems it runs from the main battery
