Need a NYers help... Thinking someone is trying to scam me

So trying to get my vehicle payment squared away and having a hard time getting on agreeable terms with the seller. I've never in a million years had an issue paying with a bank check for a car but this guy wants me to electronically transfer funds before I get the car because I can't make it to him before a bank closes and he doesn't want to do the transaction on a Saturday because my bank is closed and his bank can't call and verify if something is fishy.

So pressing on(figuring we'll get the money sorted somehow) I ask for a title# so I can get some insurance paperwork to have coverage when I drive home and I'm told the title# in ny is the same as the vin. Is this true? Starting to feel like I should walk away from this

Personally, i would never pay for a vehicle in full without seeing it in person, and meeting the seller face to face to complete the transaction. It has never done me wrong.

Why not try to arrange it on a day where his bank is able to verify the funds? I can see where the seller is coming from as i would want to verify funds as well before handing over the title and keys to a vehicle to someone i don't know.

I have bought vehicles from numerous different states and the VIN and title number has never been the same. I have never bought one from NY though, so i would just call the local DMV there to verify.

Good luck.

Walk away. ESP when asked for money wired to you. Chances are you won't hear from the person after the money is wired to them. In va the title number is not the vin.

Yeah he is bull****ting you.

I flew to Boston and went to the bank around 5PM on SATURDAY and BOA called my bank to verify funds and they did. All banks are open 24/7 through phone. My guy was worried also as we were doing it on Saturday so I gave him the slip you get with the bank check that has your info for withdrawal.

I can't get down there till next week and he says he can't wait any longer. The funds can be verified before I get there.

Scam. Next thing he's going to say is that he's getting divorced and is too busy meeting with lawyers to meet you at a bank to verify funds.

What bank do you and he have? You can tell him to hand over the keys to the bank maybe?

P.S. Tell him to sell the car then if he cannot wait. I doubt he will. So you tell him either you take the car or not. Do the transaction at the bank and have it notarized on the spot.

Ask him what bank he has and fax over your paperwork to the bank prior. The bank can verify funds prior to your arrival. That is what I did and guy felt a bit more at ease.

That's what I told him, he said I could show up with a forged check. I even offered to send a copy of the bank check to the bank and they could verify the check's authenticity

Dirt Scooters
I had a similar problem and a friend of mine took a certified bank check for a $8500 dirt bike that wasn't worth the paper it was wrote on so I can understand both sides.

Between this and the car with rolled back mileage in Cali I'm going to step away from finding one for a while. I'm amazed at how difficult it is for me to buy this damn car. Wanted to buy a Florida car in the spring/summer... Air suspension, throttle body and pedal sensor failed on my Yukon with in a week. Felt like a douche since two of the members on here checked it out for me.

As I started looking in the winter had some unexpected bills I had to pay from my business I closed

Specs? PM, pretty sure it's out of my budget, unless it has a ton of miles

Sold - 05' E55
Interesting -The car I recently sold I received a deposit when the guy came to see the car. It was a check, and the check cleared, then additional money came as a wire transfer, now when the car was delivered he didn't have the balance in cash. Boy the whole deal almost fell through because he couldn't do a wire transfer on a Saturday (credit union) He gave the guy that delivered the car a check, and on Monday he did the balance in a wire transfer.
Will the guy just hold the car if you leave a deposit?
In NY the VIN is on the registration, one portion goes on the windsheild, and the other portion we usually just leave in the glove box.

A bank certified check is just that, certified. It is as good as cold hard cash and many banks that issue them, cant even cancel them or put stop payment because they are not handled like a regular check.

The withdrawl slip and bank certified check should be enough, along with him been able to verify the funds.

That's what I'm telling him, he says it could still be forged, told him to verify the funds ahead of time. Not good enough for him. Now I'm wondering if I'll get my $500 back from PayPal

I am in NYC Queens..where is he located and title #

is not the VIN #.
The VIN is printer put each copy of a title has its own #.
I use to buy salvage cars fix and resell so I good with title info...
If he is in my area I will look at the car for you. Make sure there is a car for you and not an empty house.

Walk away. Good luck getting the $500 back from PayPal. He is doing a reverse Nigerian scam on you. Bs him to PayPal you back the funds and you will wire to his bank once you get the $$ in PayPal account. Of course you are not going to wire any $$$ at all

ok, just got off the phone with this guy... Told him if he couldnt take a bank check, I couldnt buy it from him. finally agreed I would have my bank call his bank tomorrow when the check is cut. They will verify funds, and Saturday they will verify check's authenticity.

My fcking head... I will be flying down Sat morning to possibly close on the deal
