What is this for (Parktronic perhaps?)

Just wondering something here. So on our 06 E55, we have the parking sensors on front and back, but the little led lights that parktronic seems to have on the dash (front and back) are not there. Also the button for it aft of the shifter is not there. This little thing is behind the back seat on the drivers side. So, this is probably a dumb question, but what is this for? The car beeps when you put it in gear, but I had a friend hold a piece of cardboard while I backed up and there was never a beep even after I backed into the cardboard piece. ( it was an experiment, and figured if he was holding cardboard it would not damage the bumper)

I guess the bumpers have been swapped out for the incorrect bumpers at some point if you aren't the 1st owner.

You should have the 2 LED bars and the button to turn it on and off.

The pic kinda looks like a mic of some sorts.

I thought a mic too, I believe them to be original bumpers, will have to look deeper into that. The end of that little thing in the pic had a P))) on it with the ) things going from small to large

As stated, it does not have the parktronic button on the shifter, but with that P))) thing on the end of that wire (that is a cap over a female wire plug) and the sensors on the bumpers, and the beep when you put it in reverse, it just seems odd, kind of like they added 50% of parktronic and then gave up.

Yeah my guess would be the bumpers were replaced at some point with park assist ones, and maybe they ran the wires at the factory regardless of whether the car had parktronic or not... probably cheaper to make one wire harness with all options than individual ones for this or that feature

could be OEM impact strips with holes for PDC with an aftermarket PDC system.
