Idler pulley bearings go BOOM! (pics)
Sooooo...Sunday night after coming home from a concert (KMFDM...and it was awesome) we pull into the garage and my girlfriend goes, "What is that SMELL?!??!"
Well...in retrospect, I now instantly recognize the smell as burnt belt rubber....but since I'd detailed the car earlier in the day and had really dug in on my exhaust tips with a ton of polish, I thought it was the smell of the leftovers burning off.
Thursday morning coming home from the gym, I notice NO boost. None. Zero. Felt like I was driving a C240 4Matic wagon (OK...not that bad, but still it sucked). I park in the garage and pull off the engine cover and there's a belt sitting right there, snapped in half. Look at it and confirm it's the original belt so I think little of it and call Buckhead Imports Performance and tell them what I think it is.
Drop it off in the morning... an hour later Tony calls me and goes, "ummm ... I know why your belt broke...."
Idler pulley with shredded bearings and the snapped belt:

Closer look at the idler pulley (the bearings look like itty bitty strips of linguini stuck in there):

As usual...they knocked it all out in a few hours for me...also hit my Service G ... and had me back on the road with full power back on.
The B.I.P. guys really rock and take care of their customers. I know MB Buckhead would have had the car at least another day.
I hadn't heard of this pulley blowing out on anyone yet so I thought I'd share the issue.
And sorry I haven't been on the board much - been neck (i.e. checkbook) deep in another complete restoration that should be done in about a month!

Well...before that... we're hitting a track.
I NEED 11 sec's on street tires.... (in super shi-hi-tay conditions on my first outing I did 12.01)... So I know I can do it.
I also want to steal your DR's for a run!
Timmay timmay...TIMMAY!!!!!!!
Putting it on my calendar now.

I changed mine to the ASPs as preventative maintenance and when I took the originals off at 67k miles they were about to let go anyways.
I just noticed the Buick in your profile. I've got a 66 convertible I've had for 15 years and keeps calling at me to re-do, but hasn't gotten any love yet. Roadster Shop's IRS chassis looks awesome but I haven't talked to anyone who got one for feedback.

[QUOTE=berti_00;5589664]i still have a OEM set if anyone wants it ![naughty](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/naughty.gif)
Is this the idler pulley set you're mentioning? How much? Might consider it to have it for the next time if they go bad often.
I just changed mine as it was bad when I got the car but how long do they last...approximately?

Similar experience, different engine. Had an idler pulley stop spinning on my 156 and the damn belt wiped out my radiator, thermostat housing, one intake tube and puked it's guts all over my driveway. The funniest part was the console telling me to "top off my coolant level". Just glad for warranties.

I will give you $10 for it and keep it in my car so that when the next person cuts me off I can throw it on their windshield!

BERTI 00: This is why no one should ever buy a used idler pulley set...bc this could happen anytime within 100-500 miles of putting it on their car and many of us here have no warranty!

i wouldnt either and thats why i bought the ASP set from shardul... some people want them to experiment with them or w.e the reason or have projects so to some it doesn't matter... plus my stock oem set ran like new still they turn like new bearings are in or something but i just like the look of the ASP and dont have to worry anymore ![nix](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif)
