Cat Question

My CL55 currently has gutted catalytic converters. Primary and secondary are completely gutted. It is going in to the exhaust shop Monday morning. I was going to have the cats cut out completely and replaced with a straight pipe.

I can not stand the stink any more of running with out some kind of cat. What would be my best bet as far as a universal converter goes? I did a quick Napa search and saw there were sound round ones that looked like they would work. What do the 200 cell race cats look like and where do they go in the exhaust system? (In place of primaries I'm assuming)

What headers do you have? I would put them in the primary spot if your still on stock manifolds which it sounds like you are.

So I got this solved. I had straight pipe welded in place of the primary cats and Vibrant race cats in place of the secondaries. This was much easier to say then do. MB exhaust uses different diameter tubing and made fabbing a little difficult. There was a bit of up sizing and down sizing.

It still beat spending $5,000 on a set of factory cats. The smell is gone and the car drives great.

At the end of the day completely gutting the stock cats is not worth doing. Spend the money and get some kind of cat welded in and get rid of the open cavities.

Did you turn off your rear 02 sensors then and re-tune so you can pass inspections? Your 02 sensors are set up to read the primary cat, so it would have been better to have the race cat up front and keep 02 sensors before and after.
