New to the E55 club

I just bought a really clean E55 from a member on here. I havent even picked the car up yet and ive already got the mod bug. Im going to try to keep this one tame though as it will be primarily my DD. my question to you all though, are there some threads that are not stickies that i should read to gain some knowledge? I've done some research and reading but im sure im missing the "common knowledge" type things. There are some mods i would like to do that are above your average DIY but i dont want to reinvent the wheel. I have a small fab shop at home plus im a manufacturing engineer/cnc programmer so possibilites are somewhat endless, its just time.
thank you all

Welcome.

Instead of asking us to enumerate all the mods that possibly exist, why don't you tell us where your car is now (relative to mods) and what things you have already decided to add??

Then we can fill in the blanks for you.

No offense, but every "new E55 owner" seems to make a post like this....

ahhhhhh here i go typing this again since my browser logged me out

its fair enough that i didnt really say what i want to do. performance wise
-crank pulley- i see people have trouble with them coming off, is it one brand in particular that has the most trouble due to a manufacturing flaw or is it across the board everyone stock hub and aftermarket. is it more so install error and has anyone ever tried a way to lock the bolt from backing out.

-headers- long tubes are ideal but they are big money! plus i dont want this car to be too loud. i dont drive my truck often because its too loud. i know in the gm world shorties are just about a waste of time and money but their stock manifolds are half decent. knowning that these stock manifolds suck are the gains still pretty good for a kleeman style header vs a true long tube like the mbh?

-throttle body- are the problems that arise with using a larger throttle body due to the fact that its not an oem mercedes part? what are the benefits to using a porsche throttle body? can you do either bore out the stock supercharger inlet or purchase a larger oem replacement one?

-ecu tcu tunes- again back to the GM world. trans tunes do wonders and actually help the trans by firming up shifts. is their adverse affects of running a tcu tune on these? id rather not have to rebuild the trans after 20k miles.

-idler pullies- are people changing the pullies to get more belt wrap or are the stockers known to not last long and be expensive so aftermarket is cheaper

-heat exchanger- you guys pulling out the spare tire and running the tank in there? also i guess its the consensus to run a large pump hooked up so it runs with the key on.

dont beat me up too much guys. im not new to modding cars or making my own parts, im just new to this platform and would rather not do things twice.

Crank pullies are mostly "installer error" issues, though there was the whole RTR pulley debacle where there was clearly a defective part involved. Finding a competent installer is key.... if they miss the woodruff key or don't use a NEW bolt, or don't follow the exact torquing and bolt stretch procedure you are in for trouble. There are plenty of LARGE diameter pullies on cars running fine... so this doesn't have to be an issue.

Long tubes can be quiet at part throttle if you don't chop out the rest of the system. Bruce @ TTM is famous for his setups where he installs an x-pipe and longtubes but leaves the resonator and remainder of system intact (at least 1 set of cats too IIRC). The car is quiet and luxurious as it should be for around town driving and highway cruising....but is sounds SERIOUS when you go WOT! MBHs are pretty much the ultimate longtube for these cars, but plenty of people make big power with Kleemans too... just not quite as much. Almost anything you can bolt on to replace the factory logs is going to help.

Thottlebodies are pretty far down the list (IMHO) and yes there are quite a few issues with Mercedes vs. Porsche vs. Audi? versions... the pinouts are different in some cases and it seems like a lot of guys struggle with CEL codes when things don't go 100% perfectly.

..........

The list goes on and on as far as mods, you really just need to sit down and read for a while. Find a good shop to partner with and they will save you a million expensive headaches and ultimately will save you money by getting you the RIGHT parts and tuning from the start.

Bruce @ TTM and the guys at Eurocharged have been in the E55 game a long time and can certainly get you sorted out no matter what sort of HP/TQ targets you are shooting for.

Nice Pick up, and if I remember correctly the car still has warrenty? Agree with Sterling, if you keep the stock mufflers the car will not be loud. LT are the way to go both with the power gains and heat dissipation (xpipe = no drone)
